I'm in the petroleum business. You would be surprised as to the similarity between fuel from gas station to gas station.

Product specification are almost the same, aren't refineries also sell gasoline to each other sometimes? The only difference are the chemicals of the additives.

Correct. Gasoline Company A could in fact get the EXACT same product as Company B and even FROM company B. Only minor additives differ, if even that.

Basically you are saying that it doesnt matter if i get 91 from arco vs shell because its essentially the exact same thing ?

Well not per say. If you compare Shell specifically they have their own additive but that too is a very miniscule amount. A fair comparison would be Arco's 91 to another "low end" gasoline brand.

With that said, there isn't as much difference between gasoline as people think (based on respective octane)

Would that miniscule amount justify the price enough for you to choose shell over arco ? Because where i live, difference between shell 91 and arco 91 is 30+ cents on average.

You do pay the difference for the cleaning agent chemicals in the fuel.
Like detergent to clean your engine. But for the gasoline itself, it will meet state/federal regulated specification.

Well it depends. People here will go to a discount station for a difference in couple cents PER LITER. Which is insane. It depends on person to person. If you don't have a problem filling at Arco than there shouldn't be a problem filling up there. Depends how much more than 30 cents per gallon means to you.

big brands do tend to charge you more at the pump since they have higher overheads, added additives etc.

even in an m3, that's $5/tank saved. not too shabby if the gas is arguably the same and it's only an extra 1-2 miles away. and arco's cash only (no difference here)

i'll pay more if the gas really is better at shell etc., but haven't gotten any definite facts. there's a 76 with 100 octane racing gas nearby, but that's way too pricey.

yea it adds up. There is no proven benefit between Shell gas as opposed to another leading brand. I personally don't like to fill up at a shady looking gas station. That's my mantra. I don't care if it's Shell, Exxon/Esso, Chevron or whatever.

Ugh...I always forget that when I travel to the CA. 'Oh, here's an Arco that's easy to get in/out of and it's on my way to x', pull in, go to pay, cash only. Pretty much every place here allows for paying at the pump and takes plastic.

Having to drive x miles out of my way to get the cheapest gas when it's pennies on the dollar isn't worth it IMO. People do it, but I'm fortunate to have 2 stations nearby that aren't seedy (I agree on your philosophy there) and either is on my way to going most places. The more fortunate part is that they amongst the most reasonably priced gas stations in my area. One I can hit up on the way home from work and the other on the way to work depending on the situation. Can't beat right turns near intersections of major roads. Easy in/out.

Cheapest 93 on my route, it's all the same thing. Plus with our direct injection motors it isn't like the additives are really doing anything to keep our valves clean.
