Neither or those are really a beginner camera, its the 400D thats the beginner camera to Canon. But 40D is more of a beginner camera than 5D.

I'd go with either the 17-85 IS or the 17-55 f/2.8 IS on the 40D for an all round lens

I would recommend the Rebel XT or XTi .... I have a XT and it shoots good photos. Here is a recent shoot I did with it:

Congrats and +1. I bit the bullet in September and love the thing. I've only really had chance to play with it in Seoul (see my other thread). It's awesome and a really good upgrade from my 300D.

For newbies I would still recommend a Rebel first. They are incredibly capable tools and less intimidating while on the steep bit of the learning curve.
