Its pretty hard to go wrong with a FMIC since most are pretty good. As for what to get it depends on what you are trying to do. FBO look to a 7” or Helix style. Light mods a 5” stock fit with no cutting is a good plan. I got a 5” ETS because it suited what I was trying to do & has what appears to be very good internal design. Also at the time was on a group buy. Logs show it to work well holding the IAT down in my case.
They all make horsepower claims but I have no idea how valid the claims are. I got mine to manage the IAT in the Carolina summer & any WHP gain is just icing on the cake. Thing to watch out for, like downpipes, some can tend to be way overpriced.

FMIC prices vary significantly. Price difference between ETS and VRSF are huge..
VRSF $400 - from the pic looks like good quality product, 5" inch is direct bolt-on with only clamp replacement required. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=731541 ETS are starting at $695 for 5", and $175 additional for 7" http://www.topgearsolutions.com/ets-...-bmw335co.html Than there is Active Autowerke, also close to $700 http://www.topgearsolutions.com/bmw-...port-fmic.html So what are the differences? If we say they are all the same, or close to being same, what do I need to look at to justify the additional costs? I have no problem speding $400 extra for quality product, just want to be able to justify the additional costs. What are the things I look out for?

The problem with FMIC’s is the most important part is the part you can’t see; the internal fin design. If the VRSF was available when I bought mine I would have looked very closely at it to see if anyone had a cutaway or picture of what was inside the shell.

Some people just buy fmic based on cost, others on quality of matierals, and others based on performance or a combo of all 3. When seeking the highest quality materials crasftmenship and performance we recommend the Evolution Racewerks and ETS, both made in the USA too. Performance wise many perform simiarly, you can only gain so much power from an FMIC. The difference between 5 and 7 inch normally is that the 7inch will be less prone to heat soak and will perform better for road racing or very hot climates. Lots of people think the FMIC they have is "GREAT", and im sure it is good but others are better then some in the ream of heat soaking or lack there of. ON a single gear pull they should all perform similar. Typical gains are 15-20WHP from all of the popular upgrades. |

1) Where its made, i.e. quality. 2) Core that is used, size, volume, etc. 3) end tank design. rounded, cast, squared. Better rounded end tanks flow better. 4) piping that is included. Proper size, etc. 5) Size versus install time. There is always a compromise here. Larger cores require trimming while direct plug and play units are generally smaller due to the size constraints. So if you need a lot of FMIC a direct plug and play unit may not be right for you. Lots to consider when looking at an FMIC, not just price. |

I am extremely happy with the AFE intake I ordered from you. Did a test run outside today, with scoops installed and was amazed that intake heat shield (bottom piece) was ice cold after 30 min of spirited driving... Engine was fully warmed up, oil filter housing veryhot, and both intake tubes were ice cold.. Then did a check 5 min after I shut the engine off, an heat shield started to warm up. Air scoops seem to make a huge difference in air intake temps, and also noticed engine ran about 10-15 degrees cooler... Install pics attached.. Best Roman

Don't do map 2 run map 5 with 40% e85 and 3rd gear 3k rpm to 7k 3 to 4 times and feel the difference. I get 16-17 psi with same set up as urs no issues at all.
