TSB # 11 10 07 for this issue

The best I can remember the process is that you start the car and hold the RPM at 2500 ( the RMP they said was specfic I can't recall) for 2-3 minutes then turn the car off the car for a bit (I think it was 1 minute) then repeat the process 5-10 ten times or until the problem is corrected.

The problem is directly related to a oil/air separation system and it was very clear this was the underlying problem as the system is not functioning properly.

I didn't pay much attention to this as I was looking other things.

They sound louder then a diesel.
Thats what I meant about valve clearence. If you have excessive valve
clearance you hear it at any rpm. These times were BMW engines produced
excessive valve noise are long gone. Last time I heard it was in the 70's.

I used to be a car mechanic in the 80's.

its normal, the noise also goes away when you press the clutch in while idling.
