We all hit that bridge and then agree with all the oldies that offered us that advice for years.

I bought an Astra coupe 2.2 brand new at 21. Spent a proper fortune on it before realising for the money I could have done so much better.

Bought a brand new Astra GSi turbo and got the bug again and sank a fortune into that too.

Went through a sensible phase when doing 40, 000 miles a year and drove diesel saloons. Not a penny was spent on them.

Bought the 335i and I'm happy with it but other than keeping the car in good condition and servicing, my only expense is performance grills.

I would buy a JB4 or similar as you get a lot for not a lot.

However personally I have no longer got the desire to spend thousands of pounds on my 335i as for the extra cash I could be driving an M3 or even a 911.

I've done the cycle of putting in a lot of cash to get little of it back and it does burn after a while.

Hey Dave,

Its normal mate - I can 100% concur with what you are going through.

I was the same when we first met (iphone), a few years ago in the S55, ACS 5, Porsche etc etc then started feeling like you are today and took the last 5 years out to get the priorities in order.

Remember your peugeut - waiting to get fixed while you were in the courtesy car...

Don't worry the modding bug does not die, it will remain inside you just at the back.

You are the age where you can take 3yrs or so in the back seat, having been there done that, sort yourself out for the future (priorities) and then come back when the F10 M5s and F30s are all begging to be modded.

Its normal mate... dont feel down...

if you are planning on buying a house then that's where the spare time/money will all go for a while. Time & Money are finite resources, once ur done with houses for abit you will go back to modding or try something else...

If your sound system works, all hidden and you are not taking your car to shows, you don't need to spend fortune on a audio build. Set your priorities as you feel and start working on those.
I spent one year on a boring diesel before buying the property, though I retrofitted xenons / reverse parking kit on that boring diesel.
I thinks BMW is so versatile that modding never stops. It doesn't matter if its 318i/d or 335i/d. With so much variations, many options are available. Most of us need to stop at some stage and think sensibly!

I've been thinking alot about shifting priorities recently and about how I no longer have the "compulsion" to change my cars, such as I'd always used to have.

I'm wondering about what the real reason for this is...

- I'm in a better car that needs less work
- I'm too busy
- I'm putting my money into other things (specifically saving for property)
- I'm just getting old.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but for sure - the compulsion is going away from me.

There used to be a time that every month it was nearly impossible not to spend some money on a mod or on the car generally. Literally couldn't remember a single month where I hadn't changed something on the car. This was true with all 3 of my last cars...

These days it's almost flipped. I've only bought anything for the car once in the entire last calendar year! At least it was a big purchase ( the audio) (but I've not even finished THAT!!! I got half way through, the sound is in. But I still have no install. And I'm getting close to show season. Not even that bothered).... I'm not sure if that is consolitary or not heh..

But what do you guys think the real driver is? Is it indicative of the times we live in ? Do you agree or disagree? Am I just a boring old (heh) fart now or does everyone go through "the change". I see Kav has picked up his game again which is brilliant to see and is inspiring me, but to date I've not done anything about it.

I've got so many plans for what I could do to the car, a good dozen mods in total that would really rock. But I just haven't pushed them. The only thing I want to finish is the install, but the few installers I've spoken to have seen not proactive enough in getting me booked in and I'm kind of thinking I'm not going to push to hand over money, I'll just keep it. Again, showing the way my mindset has changed I guess?

Anyway. Yeah. Old man Dave is a bit tired of modding. What do you think I should do

I must be getting old aswell mate as I'm thinking about selling the m. I think you just reach a point in your life where you just think right I've been there and done it now. Priorities change I think that's it. I've got too the stage where I think its a waste of money and not enjoying it like I should

Just buy a house and then start modding it. Carbon fiber rear rain gutters, front-mounted competition intake air conditioning unit, the mods are endless!

Just about every one of our friends are having babies, but me and the wife are just refusing to give in to peer pressure, so enjoying all our free time/disposable income whilst we can....I dare to say in 12 months time instead of looking at mods for the car I'll be busy shopping for prams and push chairs

Having said that mortgage rates at the moment are unbelievable, especially if you got a high deposit, my monthly mortagage bill less than what some people on here are spending on car finance!! It's definitely a good time to get onto the property ladder.
haha Sorry i'm new to so here so no offence intended. Even though it probably wont come across this way but when you do start shopping for prams and push chairs could i suggest the below

i missed the Boat as mine is now 3yo :P
