I just bought a WP&thermostat to replace this week. Where are the DIY guides for the air issue? And any recommendations before I start?
06 BMW 325i 114k thermostat is out but WP is still running strong. Replacing both. |

I just did this today and I can say that it was a bitch to take out and to put the new thermostat and water pump.. If you don't know what you're doing. Pay someone to do it for you.. That's all I can say..

Wp replacement
I did this project today on a 2008 328 xi. What nobody mentions is that you should really replace all your hoses, and don't forget heater core hoses at the same time of doing the pump around 100k miles. This entire system is plastic and rubber and by the time the car hits 100k, these other parts will probably be in their way to failure as well.
It does double the cost of the repair, but if you have to take all these things out to get to the pump, why not do the job right and replace the other failure points? Took me about 8 hours to do the job as the BMW service Manual does not list the steps very well. The torque on the aluminum bolts for pump is 10nm and MUST BE REPLACED with new ones. Also, when you go to take the thermostat out, realize that you really only have to remove the hose from the engine block to the pump (metal hose with three inches of rubber) and then the other two hoses can be removed easily after taking out the entire assembly. I did not know this and wasted time trying to take off the other two hoses from that ridiculous knuckle breaking area that holds the pump and thermostat. If you go to realoem, they have a diagram that will allow you to see 8 or so hoses that make up the whole cooling system . Good luck, it is not a very difficult job, but there are a lot of steps to do in order to get everything done. Be patient, curse a lot and make sure not to over torque your bolts or over tighten hose clamps as several are on plastic housings. ... Mike |

I'm in the middle of doing this now by following the video and I'm stuck 6 minutes into the video. It's more difficult to follow since the car in the video isn't the exact same so I have to make modifications. 6 minutes in, the guy loosens the first hose which I'm having trouble doing. I have a 2007 328xi and there is a big metal part that looks like part of the car's frame that is in the way of the hose. What can I do? Thanks!
