I'm reading this and thinking it's the most brilliant differentiation campaign ever.
A t shirt is a t shirt is a t shirt.....but he is saying point blank that his t shirts are for better people and they are better because they look better and if you don't look as good as his customers you are not worthy of his product and he can live without you.

He's in effect put the bitchiest most pissed off 6ft tall long legged tranny at his night club door and is turning away a good 70% of the people inline....yet they come back night after night begging to be let in. Sure they could go to another club where anyone could get in....but his slightly upper middle class club is the one they want to be a part of.

God to think only what...a few years back...all a company had to do to differentiate was to have some underaged looking models (AA) or a scantily clad celeb (Guess?)....now the CEO has to come out and more or less offend people and shock and alienate them.....

Will it work? What is your educated guess? I'm guessing yes.......when i strip away my civility and go with my gut instinct I'm going to say he's going to make the company more money and improve market share.

But what are your thoughts?

Think About it if u were to have a clothing store would u want fat ugly chicks walking in through the door looking for XXL shirts and size 15 shorts???? Hell no! He is a genius... But i deff dont think he should advertise his insanity and say the things he said... I think those strategies and targeting ideas should not be said out loud... Hes deff losing his marbles a little.

I see bigger lines at Hollister here in Germany. It gets so packed they have a bouncer outside to make sure only a certain amount of people are in the store at one time. Seen it at a couple different places too. Sad thing is, if you ever went to Hollister, California you would be puzzled to understand why the name is glorified. That place is a shit hole.

^ can't comment on hollister since i've never bought anything there. i usually get a few things (meaning less than 5) from abercrombie every year, and their stuff lasts. some of the cargo shorts i've worn/washed regularly for 5-6 yrs before tossing. so the cost difference is marginal overall.

In all seriousness, nothing makes a person want something more than being told they can't have it. Shah is completely right that, at least generalizing, girls want to be skinny (because it's mostly considered attractive). Now, this obviously doesn't hold true for everyone, but a good majority. Again, look at the amount of diet products, exercise videos, and "beautifying" surgeries.

It's the same with luxury cars - even entry level ones like our beloved 3-series. Yea, I'm sure BMW can make a $20k car, but they don't need to. Yet, people still pay for them instead of buying a better equipped KIA. Why? Because they, too, want to be part of the "elite" with the nicer cars. Again, this doesn't apply to everyone, but enough people to make a business out of.

From a business standpoint, I can actually agree with this strategy. It's just ironic as fuck because CEO is ugly as fuck. You don't need to target the largest demographic to be a successful business, you only need to carve out a niche. He's basically perpetuating a class divide and while some may not find it agreeable, it's not a bad idea. Someone should seriously call him out in an interview though and ask him if he himself is banned from A&F stores for being fuglier than the people he's trying to exclude.
