Change it, but only if you can handle the possibility of rebuilding the trans. I would guess that you have an 80% to 90% chance of making things better and a 10% to 20% chance of making things worse to the point of needing a rebuild.

I agree with an earlier post not to flush the system.

I heard it grinding a little bit ago parked it. I was going about 20-30 and herd grinding... First time I have heard this and all these symptoms have just started to happen may already be to late.

Occasionally rough shifting
And noticed it jolting forward with cruise on going 60
And tonight grinding this has all started with in the last week or so.

I would top it off with new fluid since it may just be low. If that doesn't fix it, then it sounds like you don't have much to lose by replacing the fluid (and pan/filter at the same time).

Well my friend said that that noise was not my transmission. It's a ball joint it was only making that sound on a left turn.

I wouldn't rule out the CV joint also then.

Ball joints aren't hard to check for. Jack it up and wiggle the wheels, look for excessive play.

No idea why a ball joint would cause your car to surge while set to cruise and all that other stuff you described.

Hi Beamer, Im a mecanic... and yes you should change the trans fluid!

You dont need to put ZF lifeguard you can put RedLine Atf 4 or other alternative fluid. It is less expensive and good oil. Dont forget to change the filter. Depending of your fluid, your mileage per year or the interval between the flushing you should change your fluild trans Every 2 or 3 years or 50000km approximatly.

Whit time your fluid lost his properties even the lifetime fluid.

BMW changed its lifetime policy to 100,000 miles. See your Warranty Booklet

Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger
