IIRC the Procede only communicates at 9600 baud (ie: nowhere near USB speeds). You should be OK.

That's the RS232 baud rate; the USB link from the RS232 adapter and your host PC/laptop will still run at USB 1.1 or 2.0 signalling rates. The USB packets will just be very very small. USB is logically a shared bus, so all the branches run at full speed.

Even so, unless you've got crazy electrical noise issues it should be fine.

Part I in the installation instructions

One problem is that if you're using a female A connector for the Procede, you'll need a funny cable to connect to your laptop. What you really want is a female B (or mini-B) connector, so you can use a bog-standard A-B (or A-miniB) cable.

A full-size B won't fit in a bracket meant for an A, but a mini-B probably would. It'd just be a matter of finding a cable with a female Mini-B connector on one end, or wiring something up by hand.

Edit: son of a bitch. That was way easier than I expected. http://www.buyextras.com/usbfetomib5f.html

actually i looked into this as well, but my plans when using this, were slightly different. i wanted to use part "I", which is just a plastic holder so i didn't have dangling cable in the glove box. Unfornutaley no one carries it yet, at least in North America. I even PM's the OP in that thread to see if he can help, but got no response. That solution would actually be perfect for those that do have the 6fl option and can't do this mod.

What is the 6FL option? I doubt I have it. I do have that aux jack in my armrest though. COuld we use the existing aux jack so I can save 40$?

VERY NICE!! I am in Tampa area and I'm in Miami frequently. You think I could meet up with you sometime as I am kinda losing you on the install. I am super paranoid about f~ing up my car. I am happy to do this myself but might be nice to see. If not would you at least be able to help with the install if I have questions? Good Job as I too didn't feel like paying $350 for a Blue Tooth connection.

It's a neat setup; glad it works. Nobody would guess its your proceed.

I was actually thinking of picking up that 6FL jack just to supply USB Vbus for phone/iPod chargers.

the 6fl option is the housing i replaced my original one with. it includes the usb port for you to charge and control your ipod through idrive or the standard radio. if you only have the aux jack then you don't have the 6fl.

you could drill a hole in it, but it would just stand out. the reason i did it like this is, who the hell in the dealership is gonna know?

There is a possibility that it can be done for under $100. Has anyone looked into it besides Eugen?

Yeah, other people have looked into it. Eugen's solution I would consider over-engineered; he uses two industrial bluetooth-serial adapters, which I think is just because he trusts them not to flake out.

I'm quite comfortable with Bluetooth gadgets, and have Bluetooth on all my laptops, so if I were to do BT-Procede I'd just get one serial->Bluetooth dongle (for the ProCede) and use built-in bluetooth on the laptop side. I've also used bluetooth devices as pseudo-Serial devices before in both OS X and Windows and it's really not a big deal to set up. In theory it "just works", and I've never had to do any significant troubleshooting. (If I were selling a solution I had to support I might have a different opinion on the matter.)

That nicely lops the price in half, before you start shopping around for cheaper serial adapters.

Edit: Here's one for $80, but I wouldn't stake much on its reliability without testing it out first

I bought all of the parts online for $95, including all shipping:
1 IOGear GBS301 (Bluetooth v1.1) ,
1 AnyCOM 2.0 USB to Bluetooth,
1 XM Roady 12VDC-6VDC car adapter
With this setup PROcede software *can* open the COM4 port, which apparently was the problem requiring Eugen to go with 2 Sena interfaces.
Only potential problems I see are 1) the IOGear is Bluetooth v1.1 (no freq hopping) vs Sena's Bluetooth v1.2 (freq hopping) and 2) No switched power available in engine bay (required by newer cars). However, the setup should work fine.
