It does have *some* advantage in safety - specially getting a flat at speed - but other than that, RFTs suck! suck! suck! suck!!!!!!

It's uncomfortable, heavy (inefficient), expensive! How can it get worse than that? Both my cars do have RFTs but when they are due, they will have regular summers.

I carry electric pump, green slimer, and tire patch kit in the trunk. When you do get a flat, most of the time it causes slow leak. Your car will tell you that you have the slow leak, and you have ample time to repair that - thus no need for a spare or missing RFT most of the time. If the tire is damaged beyond the repair, which can happen to RFT as well, you need to replace it regardless.

The weight is one big factor for me, which is OK for 328i but on X5 19" RTF the tires are damn heavy and dangerous to bring it up to the tire rack on the garage wall.. the winters are considerably lighter.

By the way, I had flats on my previous car -IS350 - which did not have RFTs but TPMS. Early warning of flats is far more useful than RFT. I never used spares on the IS350 even after getting the flats.

Run flat tire technology is improving all the time and I'll wager most if not all the negative opinions expressed here are based on dated information and typically oft-repeated hearsay rooted in previous generation tires. The Conti contact SSR3's on my wife's 335D are the best tires I have ever driven on any car ever. I'm 55 years old, presently own several different classes of vehicles, all of which I've run through at least two sets of tires since ownership and my oldest car just got it's 7th set of tires last summer since I bought it in 1985.

The safety factor alone is worth it to me. The fact that they have now developed to the point where they are comparable to any conventional tire in every important respect is in my opinion, just icing on the cake.

I ve had RFT since bought the car new. They have saved me from being stranded a couple of times. I know they could be harsh on the roads but like someone here said, it all depends on the roads you drive. Here in San Diego the freeways and llocal roads where I drive are not bad. Ive found good deals on used RFT around town and online so price has not been an issue to me. I voted yes on RFT.

Runflats, because of their very stiff walls, are very harsh on the rims. I'm in the process of new rims/tires and am going non-RFT. I'll go with no spare (I have roadside assistance on my insurance) and then invest the $240 for a donut spare to save trunk space, and some tire changing tools at a later time.

People love the ride and price of non runflats, but totally disregard the science behind it. Its most defiantly a safer tire to use. For some they dont care about safety, though others do. Especially with a car with no spare, you can only hope for a small puncture at slow speeds with non-rft.

I gambling with non-rft and no-spare...if i had rft I wouldn't worry at all.

Another negative trait of RFTs: I got a nail in one and took it to goodyear for a patch. Goodyear would not remove the tire from the rim to apply a patch because of the high risk of damaging the runflat sidewalls which would ruin the tire. Their policy on RFTs was to only replace with new, not remove/repair/re-mount. Goodyear would not plug the tire either, they only patch (non-runflats, that is). Had to go to a gas station garage for the plug across the street.

Everyone has their opinions, and makes up their own mind. I personally don't think the juice is worth the squeeze on runflats when considering purchase of new tires.

Like I said, they are improving with each new model. You did not mention what Conti you had, so your observation is invalid for people currently evaluating a RFT decision.

There was a big improvement from the Conti SSR2 to the SSR3.

RFT felt like wooden cart wheel, a big No for me, I put on non RFTs and carry 1 extra full size wheel and tire in the trunk for spare.
