Zero problems so far, at 30K.

The AC belt is starting to squeal very very intermittently but I'm not going to list that as a reliability issue. If it gets worse I'll have them change it.

Chevron > Shell > 76 > Arco (last resort) for me.

I'm probably going to jinx myself but my 2011 with 35K miles has only had one warranty issue so far. Routine maintenance, recalls, and the warranty item being a squealing AC compressor belt. SES has never illuminated (yet anyway). Car was initially a service loaner so was driven hard at the beginning keeping the carbon at bay. I put on less than 10K miles before the EGR/Programming update was applied that hopefully resolved the carbon issues. Now I try and push it hard from time to time to keep things cleaned out (although I have a hard time explaining this to the wife if she is with me at the time ). Also it seems as DDE failures are on the older models and were resolved for the 2011's? Not much info on this but seems to be a pattern.

Chevron was reported to be poor in the threads I saw for CA diesel that had actual responses from the oil companies. It was on a diesel truck site, can't remember which one.

Here's something from a recent article about CARB:

"Chevron paid $25,000 in penalties for supplying and selling more than 36,000 gallons of diesel fuel in August 2009 that did not meet a required minimum cetane number. (The cetane number indicates the combustion quality of a diesel fuel, and how likely it is to create excess hydrocarbon emissions. When the cetane number is too low, unburned hydrocarbons, which lead to smog, tend to increase.)"

Hmmm. I filled up with Chevron for the first time ever yesterday. It was near Price, UT. I will admit there are multiple factors at play here. And my mileage on that Chevron diesel is based only on a 3.5 gallon top up this AM. But I got 44.7 mpg. That is from near Price UT to Hill AFB UT near Ogden.

Uh oh. I was always told their regular gasoline was the best so I assumed it would also apply to their diesel brand. Better start hitting up Shell then.

In my (anecdotal) experience, I've had the best experience with Exxon diesel, which consistently got 1-1.5mpg better per tank than Chevron, after observing about 5 tanks of each. Higher cetane should give you better MPG.

Right now I'm using BP because it's the only station carrying diesel that's along my new route from work. My MPG has gone into the crapper now that my commute is shorter with less highway driving.

So far been pretty happy i'd say its just as reliable if not more than most cars. Broke a diff had that replaced may need to get an LSD just to be on the safe side for all the torque ;D Going in for squeaky AC belt. BMW has been kind so far.

Other than that my cupholder is still holding up after being kneed a few times. 32k Miles and have been using any diesel I can, add some XPD for good measure every tank.

Catalytic converters and NOx sensors replaced as well as radiator fan at 33,000 miles.

Seems like they failed after an "Italian tune-up" which may have put too much carbon through, I don't know. Car started to have ugly yellowish stuff come out of the exhaust instead of the mild blackish/watery stuff that does minor staining of the inside exhaust. Don't know if the mom and pop popular low priced Texaco station has too much water in their diesel tank so I am thinking of switching.

Move to a state that doesn't have diesel emissions testing, and get a stg 2 tune with all the deletes. Should be much more reliable then.

There were apparently 10,000 335d's sold in North America. We have no idea how reliable they really are from reading how some owners have fared. Consumer Reports does not publish its data on absolute reliability.

Knock on wood, outside of an episode requiring replacement of the catalytic converters and NOx sensors fixed under warranty, which I believe was from bad fuel (water contaminated) and a one-time use of additive, and a new A/C pulley/belt/compressor (a known problem area), my car has been very reliable. I'm comparing it to other German diesels (I've had 3 others in the past, all lasting a long time/high mileage, no CBU problems). My d has 76,000 miles on it.

My car was a late build when the DDE was updated a few times already (probably saving on new injectors and maybe CBU). I only use high volume, top-tier brand fuel, drive it "nicely" without babying it, and have done some extra maintenance (transmission fluid/filter/sleeve and differential fluid change at 65,000 miles).

Reliability as in being stranded or illuminated check engine lights due to overly sensitive emissions and electronics? It seems the largest problem with 335d/35d's are CEL's triggered by NOX sensors and or emission related components, which will not leave you stranded. A bit annoying but doesn't effect the reliability of the car.

I've put over 52k miles on my 35d since November 2014 and its been dead nuts reliable. I've done a few preventive repairs but, overall it has not failed me once!

In addition, I'd much rather have the comfort and excitement on my BMW's over just about anything else. I'll deal with a few CEL's now and then for the pure driving enjoyment both cars provide.

I'm going to say my car is not broken, its running like a twin turbo champ! I've never had it leave me dead on the side of the road. I purchased it used in April 2015 with 28K miles, and now I'm at 44K miles. Its been to Arizona and Back, and to Yellowstone National Park and back. Its been great car to drive.

Has it broken, yup. EGR Valve and EGR cooler as well as a vacuum hose. If I wasn't under warranty I'd just bypass them all. Other than those annoyances, its been a great car.

120k miles, so far CBU, AC belt, fuel pump power thing, DEF tank level sensor. I don't count my 2 accidents and 2 other road impact incidents as well; despite what the other half thinks..

I bought my D in May 2013 when it had 41 K miles. I had been turned onto the BMW diesels by a friend of mine from the UK. The test drive was amazing and I had to have the car.

Since that time and 35 K miles later, I have had the tail lights replaced under CPO and had a month-long stay in Jan/15 at dealer with what appeared to be CBU issues - 'smoothness', 'zero adaptation' and 'cylinder 1' codes. They did nothing mechanical, just updated the adaptations and such. Other than that, it had been just routine maintenance - new battery, oil changes, new tires, etc.

When the CPO warranty expired in Oct/15, I had already sourced parts for the delete. A month after the warranty expired, I got the CBU codes but on cylinder 2. As the appointment was already made for the delete at BPC in Raleigh, NC, I decided to have the cleaning performed prior to the delete / tune. So now with the delete and Bob's stage 2 tune, I feel that the car will be more reliable than ever. MPG has improved and the power / torque is incredible.

I hope to drive the 335d for another 5 years. The combination of MPG and performance make this car so unique.
