I had the spring fail recently. Solution is to replace the whole EGR cooler.

The BMW fault code was: 4873 Additional EGR cooling, plausibility: Additional EGR cooler bypass valve does not open

When the spring fail, the valve stay open all the time. Looking from front of car and the top, The valve is at bottom of EGR cooled. When the spring is operating correctly, the lever should rest to the left. When broken, it stay to the right and valve is always open.

Someone should manufacture these springs so we can buy them and replace whenever they fail.

I had to replaced the whole EGR cooler, almost $600 online part cost. It does not look like the spring can be easily replaced. Here is a picture of the broken spring (located underside of EGR cooler). The vacuum actuator is removed.

Did either of the cooler hoses get replaced when they changed the egr? A good friend with a keen eye spotted it on my car. I don't think this caused any problems in my case - no symptoms yet anyhow.

I replaced the top hose because I broke it during the disassembly. One minor problem, it was not stock at any of the 5 BMW dealers in Atlanta but I was able to get the next day from the warehouse in Savanah.

Broken Spring..

Dealer replaced the EGR cooler and all is well. It was (is) CPO so I didn't try to fix it myself but a broken spring doesn't sound too difficult to repair/replace.

Try This:
