La Jolla is in a much safer position, for now.
Yeah, essentially SD county is surrounded by fires. I'm off I-94 but near downtown and from my window I can see the blackened sky south of me, which means the Chula Vista and Otay Mesa areas are burning..

My area is currently safe since it's kind of toward the ocean but it's very very windy...I think the only safe place now is the coastal areas, but they're saying the weather will get worse tomorrow, hotter and drier...hopefully everyone is safe...

sucked for me was that I spent 3 hrs on Sat washing/waxing my car and now it looks like shit...

Rancho Bernado community is essentially wiped off the map (OK, a little exageration, but pretty close), Poway is also burning up, I-15 south/north bounds are closed between 76 and 78. Escondido is also threatened..

The fire is approximately 4 miles away (Chula Vista / Otay Lakes) from my house and I can see the flames just across the lake. As of now evacuation is voluntary. Needless to say all my essentials are packed and ready to go.

Here are a few pics I took from this morning and this evening, just before evacuating.

Lake w/mountains in the background this morning....

Same lake this evening...

Gazebo from a park across the neighborhood from this morning....

Gazebo from this evening...

View of the fire from my house...

Hellish glow....

Well, the family and I just evacuated and are thankful for being unharmed and safe. We are currently staying with my in-laws for now and we pray that we have a house to come home to tomorrow.

Take it easy buddy. We're in UTC. A couple of evacuated friends and their kids are with us tonight. Two other friends report losing their houses so far, but they haven't been back to confirm.

Stay safe.

My house is on the top of the hill just behind the SUV in your pic. This must have been taken early in the day because the fire made it over the horizon, down the hill, burning ALL the brown (desert looking) areas you see down to the house lines where the fire fighters held it off.

The fire approached so fast, and got within 1000ft. We were on mandatory evac by fire department (ringing doorbells, etc) and werent allowed back in until monday evening.

I will post some of the crazy pics, but all I can say was pure chaos in canyon country.

Sucks.. so I flew out this morning to Dallas with a colleague. After we landed, he receives a mandatory evacuation for his house in Castaic. The fire was behind his house *sigh*... His wife and family got out fine. He had to turn around and fly back to Burbank.

Here is basically a zoom of that previous pic - from the perspective of my balcony facing north towards aqua dulce.\

These were taken within on minute - shows how fast the fire can scale a hillside when pushed by wind too

That evening it made it to the houses on the edge of our community

You guys this is crazy... I did not expect these pictures to be so intense, especially euro3b's crazy sky pictures of red smoke filling the air and nine4surfah's before and after photographs of the lake and mountains surrounding her house.

Everyone take care of yourselves and I hope everything turns out fine. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this fire and I wish you all the best.

My sister and her husband's sisters/brothers/etc/etc live in SD. They went to La Jolla to evac at another family members house. They said there was too much smoke there so now they are up here in Laguna. Pretty nuts.

More than 500,000 people evacuated in SD county. This might burn through the city all the way to the Pacific.
