Had my water pump and thermostat replaced today (preventave maintenance), $645 in Virginia. Slight discount for being PCA member.

I totally agree. Not everyone is a DIY'er and as this person said...he did what was best for him at that moment in time.

I agree as well. I'm glad I dodged the water pump bullet, 90k on the original pump. I'll replace it again at 180k. I'm also thankful for my insurance roadside assistance, starter failed in my driveway, I had my car taken to my indie 45 miles away and it was covered.

My water pump and thermostat only had 62,000km on them

The good news is it should be covered under the extended warranty

Exactly. I'm a DIY'er and replaced my water pump and thermostat myself but it was not an easy task, spending 3-4 hours of which a lot of it was spent trying to contort and squeeze my hand up into a tiny crevice to blindly guide an e-torx socket attached to a flopping universal joint onto a grimy bolt head, which I finally managed only by luck. By the time it was all done it was the middle of the night. If I had to do it again, I would remove the electric fan/shroud assembly, which neither of the numerous DIY guides nor TIS 2007 indicated to do.

Sure, I only spent $460 for all-BMW pump, thermostat, and thermostat-to-water pump hose, but for many, their time is money in which they would make more of by working their jobs and paying someone else for the repair instead of spending it on a lengthy DIY. Or they may not have the tools nor facilities to do such a repair. Not only that, but a broken water pump (or any other disabling failure) means a deadlined vehicle that needs to be repaired ASAP, or money is wasted on rentals (unless you own multiple cars).

Called tow truck and paid $150 to tow it back to dealership in NJ.

How much should I expect to pay for a water pump and thermostat replacement at the dealership? I know they accept coupons from other dealers, does anyone know dealers that offer 10-20% off expensive repairs? I've sunk a lot of money into this car recently for maintenance and some other repairs, and I know this bill is really going to hurt.
Water pump and thermostat at a dealer are around $1200. It's a pretty easy fit so find an Indy and to should be able to save $200 to $300... Mine just went and it cost me $738 at my indy. I got parts at cost. 3 hours labor.

It was an awful experience when it happened.
