We have one of those condensing tumble dryers - it stores the water extracted in a removable container that I empty into the washer bottle, smells beautiful.

Yep, sheps is referring to me. Mine clogged up and the dealer fixed it under warranty. The filter got clogged because I was not using bottled water or tap water that had been boiled first! Also you are supposed to only use BMW washer fluid. They were pretty good about it and I know they thought it silly that a £35k car gets its washer jets clogged because of tap water!

There's nothing in the manual on using deion H2O (that I've noticed). Anyway I use softened water (we have a water softener for the house) and Einszett Additive (http://www.cleanandshiny.co.uk/index...d&productId=87). Works great so far.

Just buy the ready mixed stuff.
I always keep a 4liter container in the trunk during winter months.

Was a load of rubbish about de-ionised water! I drink tap water, I wash in it n' everything. Is it right about this less than +2'C? Which genius thought of that? What happens if my windscreen is dirty, and the deionised water, mixed (in the correct proportions) with BMW screenwash isn't frozen? Muppets.

I'm sure I used mine this morning and it was about -3.0C up here. In winter I usually keep the washer tank filled with a higher concentrate of washer fluid. This means that when I go out to the car in the morning, I start the engine, hit the windscreen defrost button to defrost the bottom part of the screen first where the wipers are. After this area is defrosted, I spray the screen with the washer fluid and it helps melt the rest of the ice on the the screen. It works very well and saves me having to defrost the screen with an ice scraper or de-icer.

-5'C this morning, washer pump was working fine, as were the jets until they froze up.
I think the pump perhaps just froze up on Saturday before I had chance to top up with antifreeze, then didn't defrost until yerterday lunchtime.

Hi all
The washer jets are heated (on all e92's and probably all E9*) so as long as you've got the correct mix of screen wash/water in the water bottle then the jets should operate fine. Not sure what temperature they work down to as cafe.racer said his froze at -5c? |

Windscreen washer jets not working
My washer jets for the screen fail to work but the headlamp ones do.
I spoke to my local stealer(Shitners of Newport) and they informed me that it was quite normal for this to happen and enquired as to what screen wash I use. I replied "BMW" as this has always been used in the car. They replied that the filter was blocked and that it would not be covered by warranty. It would cost between £80 and £100 to put right. I thought no way am I paying this and told them what I thought of them. Well today I decided to have a go at it. It took me about 1.75 hours to remove the inner wing splash guards, fully remove the washer resevoir and clean/unblock filters. Put it all back together working fine again and no leeks. I should have pursued the after sales manager but with the current conditions I just needed the car fixed. I will take it up on Monday with BMW UK. Steve |

They do try it on sometimes hey.....piss take ...u would think right now there be going a little further as they need people to get business and not turn it away.
Astonishing isnt it for a 35k car lol.... Glad u mentioned there own wash lol....erm..now what lol... Name and shame the dealer in opinions section...they dont deserve ur business. |

What precautions have others used to avoid the filter getting blocked? My e46 was a leased car, but my new one that is coming next month is bought by me, so extra care needed .

The e46 was easy to do; not tried on an E9x yet.
I personally do not see a problem with the dealer. The filter has become clogged due to water impurities or poor quality additive (?) but I don't see why a blocked filter is their problem. As you see, it's a fair amount of labour and a filter blocked is not a warranty issue IMO. You could argue that the filter did its job properly and prevented the jets being totally jammed up and possibly needing replacement (not cheap). *EDIT* - just read you only use BMW wash so it isn't that. Some cheap supermarket additives leave horrible deposits (sulphides?)

This has just happened to my E92, i've call my local stealer and they want to charge me £130 to fix it. Does anyone know of a dealer that will fix it for free in the Bristol or Windor/London area ?
Cheers, David |
