The results. So I did one pass of using the Dr Colorchip and there was a noticeable improvement. Then I switched to trying different methods of filling the larger scratches and dings by building up layers of paint and letting it dry for an hour at a time before using the finishing solution which would leave the painted spots darker than they should be but I went back and did the normal process described in the videos 2 or 3 times to bring it back to match the color. Repeated this process a number of times on the deeper marks. I think it turned out well, I could not see a way to improve further without filling and sanding etc.

An update - the results have lasted through rain and a wash, even though it's only been a couple days. Did try some options to clear the spots but was not successful in that attempt.

I ended up getting Dr. Colorchip. The $59 one was enough to do the marks on the hood at least 10 times and have plenty left.

Results look great! Forgot if I mentioned earlier, but the only thing that may improve it a bit is to fill in with clear paint. However, without filling perfectly, sanding, etc it still won't look near perfect, so I'd just stick with what you did. The pictures speak for themselves... huge improvement and I bet doesn't look at all bad from 10+ feet away.

If I do the chip repair, should I do it before or after polishing the car?
Dave to answer your question, I prefer to polish the paint beforehand in order to remove dead paint around the chip, clean up the chip a bit and know that I've leveled the surface to where it should be (considering you have swirl marks, etc.). After, you want to clean out the chipped section with alcohol or another grease remover to prep it for the paint. I like to use alcohol and also the "thinner" that comes with the Dr. Colorchip kit.

The downside to polishing before is that after you do this (on more sensitive paints) you'll get some micromarring from rubbing the cloth with thinner when removing excess paint, which leads to having to repolish the section. Not a big deal at all, but something to note.

Yes from 5 to 10 feet away it looks like there isn't anything there and that's about as much as you can ask for.

I have already filled in most of my paint chips with base color to the point of overflowing it. On hind sight, I should just used enough base to cover what was needed and then overflowed with clear.

Ordered this "nib file"

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and

run blocker

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

to take care of a couple sagging paint spots I have on an M3 bumper a friend just painted for me.

My understanding is the nib file works like a planer and should just shave off paint that is higher than what its edge slides across. So, I nib file it down and then use the small run blocker to hold 1200-3000 grit sand paper to get the small area ready for compounding. I'll see how it goes.
