My tires are original conti RFT.. Got almost 15,000 on them and the last 4,000 have seen a lot of sideways around switchbacks on some coarse hill town roads.. They've probably got 80% tred

To OP, you driving with the DSC off all the time? I just changed the rear stock non sport RFTs for the first time with 40k Miles on them (so the car would be drive able in the snow). At 40k they were far from bald, probably 4/32" still on them. Something is wrong. Fronts might make 80k.

Yes, I got over 20k miles out of my stock michelin RFTs (26k, I think), and I was trying to burn them up so I could justify the purchase of new shoes

How often do you check your tire pressures? Let us know what your before& after looks like as far as allignment.

Alignment with every new set of tires. I put 17K on set of OEM Bridgestone RFTs, which had a pothole not knocked the rear alignment out would have made it into the low 20's and I thrash on the car weekly DCT off. Also why do you keep going back to RFT tires?

P.S. Use a good shop. Some places like Pepboys and the quick in and out tire places will just deflect the suspension enough to bring the readings into the acceptable range. I've watched it done to a friend's car at a tire shop.

about 20k for me

I get about 20k on a good set of tires, I prefer PS2's, the conti's just don't last. I going to try a sticky compound tire next time to see if that helps.
Traction is an issue, I have gone to the widest set of rims and tires I can fit under there and I routinely spin the tires without trying. Its not the roads its the excess of torque. I swap my symmetric set (snows) tires front to back regularly in order to even out the wear. Can't do that with the performance set since they are asymmetric. I've considered tuning to boost the torque... but I have tooooo much low end torque already for any set of sneakers I can put on it. I don't want to have to modify the wheel wells to handle a much wider tire ... to likely to give me rust issues later on. My son has been recommending a limited slip diff... that might improve it but its not a simple or cheap fix either. There has to be a bunch of reprogramming to get it right.
Not that I don't have everything I need to do that... I'm just not motivated to go there yet.http://www.e90post.com/forums/images...burnrubber.gif

Additionally, if Both your tires are uniformly bald, LSD will help...but not with your tires.

I think you just have crappy tires.

I'm not certain you understand what a LSD is. Short of you buying a custom built one-off electronic limited slip differential there's no "tuning" for this part. You won't be tuning lock-up/release on acceleration and deceleration like a racecar. With what's available for our car its a mechanical unit with preset limits. Like the Quaife which is a helical gear style LSD or the Giken/OEM units that use clutch packs. The only setup on these is during the installation which is like setting up any differential.

I will make an alignment appt and set aside a minimum "2 rear sets and 1 front set per year" tire budget I guess. Even if the alignment doesn't get me much, it will give me some peace of mind.
I am down the hill a bit from you in EDH. We sure do have great places to drive near home, don't we?

What color is your car? I'll look out for you.

Pray for snow.

Alignment done. Both rears and one front were off spec, and it drives a little better now. Service Advisor said he didn't think this would account for all my premature wear but would help. He suggested a different tire too.

Readings below - maybe somebody understands these numbers and can tell whether these variances would account for unusually eating rear tires? I only posted the readings that were out of spec in the first place.

Readings:

Left camber was -1.11 now -1.47
Left toe was .49 now .08

Right camber was -1.09 now -1.43
Right toe was .14 now .08 (was already within spec)

Rear total toe was 1.03 now .17

Thrust angle was .17 now 0.0

Do you think my rears will wear down a little slower now?

the toe was pretty rough on the left but it sounds like anything would help your situation.

heres some reading the thrust angle is odd to me.

Haven't experienced the effects of 1deg toe in on our car, but I'd suspect that is your primary culprit.

How on earth are you wearing them that quick? Maybe take a video of your daily driving and watch it over and see how you really drive. I always think I drive normal but my gf insist I drive pretty aggressive.

Hi - I have only 15k miles on my car - It came with the Michelin Pilot Sport run-flats.. I would guess they are maybe 50% worn. Great tires.. Based on what I'm reading here I would get them again..
