That was my initial reaction as well. Although on one hand Marty told the detectives that Cohle was "getting on a read" on them, I think he has his doubts.

Love this show. Was sceptical at first but I'm glad I stuck to it. Finished episode 6.

So we've got 2 more episodes. Honestly I think Matt Mc. is my favourite actor. He just epic.

I had been thinking it was one of the 2 main characters, especially as the flashbacks (which are presumably the truth) began to diverge more and more from the story they (and the ex-wife) were giving the detectives.

Keep in mind the thing the little girl victim in the asylum said to Mc about the big, scarred guy. It was at that point that he realized there was a 3rd perp, and I'm assuming that's what he meant when he flagged Woody down in the present day and told him something like "we have unfinished business". I think perp 3 is the head of the religious group that was establishing the schools in rural areas. Don't forget what the former preacher (now dead I think) told Mc he found in the guy's study, hidden in the book.

I knew that lawn mower guy would come back into the story. Even in 1995, he seemed off.

Yep good point. Another site predicted it would be him, amazingly.

I think that would be too easy. I read in an interview with the director; he said the ending would have a definitive/logical conclusion and that his intent isn't to try and "fool" the audience.

Can't wait for Sunday

My wildcard theory is that it's Marty. And that he's going to continue to help Cohle uncover what has been going down until Cohle realizes it's Marty. At that point, Marty will then kill Cohle and pin everything on him.

Check this out:

Take a look at the mural on the wall of the ward where Kelly (one of Ledoux's victims) has a breakdown when talking to Cohle.

Then take a look at the paining above Marty's bed (I think it is his bed, or is above one of his mistresses' beds).

Very interesting, I have a gut feeling their Captain/Lieutenant is involved in the cover up, but yeah that lawn mower guy too. Creepy

Check out this link. According to this it can't be Marty or Cole because that would be the typical cheesy gimmicky end which the director said it wouldn't be, but who knows.

Yeah without question the lawnmower guy is the Yellow King, Spaghetti Monster, Man w/ the Scars, or whatever his primary name is.

I was just throwing out a "dark horse" theory, if you will.

There has been other strange stuff that has happened with Marty:

- One of his daughters has her crown get stuck in a tree (resembling the deer antler crowns)

- His daughters set up a rape/murder scene using dolls in their bedroom when they're younger

Yeah I'm hoping that the Marty theory isn't correct.

That's just my wildcard theory. And as I said above, there has been some strange stuff associated with him and his family over the years.

We know for a certainty at this point that the lawn mower guy is likely the Yellow King.

What we don't know is the extent to which the government and State Police helped to cover up what was going on.

Agreed.

They'll get some top-notch actors for the next story arc though, that's for sure.

Everyone will want a piece of this.

For sure, to piggy back off now Oscar winner Mcconaughey, actors are likely to line up.

I think Marty's wife's father involved... Cause Marty's daughter behavior shows she was exposed to inappropriate things

Countdown begins... Going to be on at 9pm pst.

Now THAT was a finale.

SPOILER ALERT -

DO NOT PASS THIS POINT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE LAST

EPISODE.

I thought for sure Cohle and Marty were both going to die in that shit hole.

There is still work to do. I know there are more Tuttles to catch but Cohle and Marty deserve a life. Let those 2 black detectives catch the rest.

Not the best episode. I wanted to see more of the lawmower's man's house, perhaps some history of him. Seems they spent a lot of time building the set of where he lived, yet didn't spend much time there.

Finished the last episode. Inside that cave was tense! I thought Rust was a gonner for sure. I didn't get the last 10 minutes or so of Marty and Rust in the hospital and than talking afterwards. Could have used that 10 minutes for fleshing out the bad guys history etc.

That last 10 minutes were very cathartic, in my opinion.

Cohle and Marty finally really bonded. Cohle finally opened up emotionally after being closed off for years.

Also, Cohle ended on his most optimistic note ever in commenting that in the beginning there was only darkness and now, because there is at least some light, the light is winning. The story ultimately was about good vs. evil and in the end, good won.

The writer insists that both Cohle and Hart are modern "heroes" (albeit flawed ones). I think we saw that clearly come to fruition as the narrative/story arc finally concluded.

Random fact: The man responsible for writing and producing True Detective (Nic Pizzolatto) was a professor at the undergraduate institution I attended (DePauw University).

The last 10 minutes were brilliant IMO. A lot of people complain about it saying "too many loose ends", but this Tuttle scandal goes a lot deeper than can be handled by 2 old detectives.

Some choice scenes from the last 10 minutes for me:

- It looks like Marty will have a relationship with Maggie as the mother of his children and a renewed relationships with his daughters. Very emotional scene.

- Cohle finally shows real emotion as a human being and he seems like less of the guy who suggested the entire human race have one "last midnight", and he actually bonds with his friend, Marty.

The ending was awesome. Anyone catch the last bit of dialogue between Rust and Marty as they are walking towards the car and the camera pans up. I am going to have to watch it again.

If you read my post above, we are very much on the same page.

Yeah that was great. As I said before, a very cathartic and reasonable ending.
