So, the CA emissions warning on BMS website has me worried, being that i live in CA. Is this more of a formality? Or will it cause me to fail smog in the future? I am not really interested in the performance gain, but more for the "metal vs plastic" aspect. My stock CP is leaking (no tunes). Thanks

yes, if the guy see it, it will fail visual inspection since it isn't oem or CARB certified

if the oem pipe is cracked, I'd be afraid of it throwing errors and failing :/

I'm keeping mine for just that reason, but I may just suck it up and pay someone to get a pass

I didn't see any cracks. It's leaking at the joint between the DV and the CP. Enough to throw a 30ff code under load (at least i hope this is the cause), but when around town it is ok.

Peace of mind upgrade. Felt no difference in throttle response whatsoever. Got the ER using stock DV's for now.

I'm at 105k and have been modded since about 10k or so (although I did drive about 10k unmodded). I think my dv's are leaking. If my logging confirms it, I'll be getting a CP very soon.

In addition to improved reliability and the guarantee of no boost leaks a lot of guys also get charge pipe to run methanol injection and because they want to add a BOV to their setup.

If you just want to get a chargepipe, but not change over to BOV, you can do so? Or they can only support a new BOV and you need to buy a new one along with a CP?

It might help with higher boost since it won't crack, you can also add what ever you want when it comes to blow of valves.

In CA I'd suggest not doing this. I had a supercharger setup and swapped out the vortech blow off valve with a vortech racing one and when i got pulled over the cop had me pop the hood and wrote me up for a smog violation. I couldn't drive the car till i saw the referee. It was a $500 ticket as well. After that i just installed 2 stock ones and moved on.

In our cars, this is more than likely not going to have that happen unless you get a cop that knows a lot about cars. Most people don't even realize bmw's are turbocharged lol. You'll probably be fine, just don't get caught in the off the side random smog inspections. You'll be going to the referee if you do.

I'd Highly suggest you paint it black if its not black. That way it looks stock and your more than likely not going to be noticed. I also suggest keeping the stock blow off valves.

Just beware of the risks when running them.

I'm FBO with RB turbos and at 90k miles been on stock the whole time and pushing 20psi. I have had zero leak issues with the stock charge pipe and diverters. I guess I'm lucky.

We were all lucky until the luck ran out

I've had 2 OEM CP's go on our shop cars and have had at least 4-5 cars towed to our shop because of an exploding CP issue.

I just had my charge pipe crack. Stage 1 sport Cobb tune ONLY! On a 335is, With 40k miles.
I always thought of this as mod only needed at the upper power levels, but here i am, waiting for a vrsf charge pipe to be shipped.
It's a pain in the ass to wait. For as cheap as it is, I wish I did it before my stock one failed.

Btw, I ordered it through top gear solutions, thank you Jeff! But the sales department says they haven't been able to get ahold of you guys at vrsf, tiago!
Maybe you can help expedite my order to get my baby running again ;-)

Since the new one will take a while to get to you, you can drive your car still with a temp solution. Go buy some JB Weld and use that to cover up the crack thats in your pipe. Wait 24h for it to cure and your good to go. This would actually repair your stock intake pipe. JB Weld is some of the strongest stuff I've ever used. If it can do this, it can hold 20psi of air without any effort at all... The good is that you can re-use the stock one for smog as well as a nice backup.

Thank you! Good thought. I always have jb weld laying around. Unfortunately it's cracked all around the mouth of the pipe. I was able to rig it up though.
I wrapped the manifold with a couple layers of electrical tape, slid the cracked pipe up as high as it would go, then I used a 4" worm clamp to tighten it down. It's been staying put! Just to be safe though, I changed my Cobb to the valet map. So it's running without any boost whatsoever. That will safely hold me off for a bit.
I just got news that my pipe was shipped out and I'll have it Friday! :-)
Thank you jeff@topgearsolutions!!
Thank you vrsf!

Thats pretty fast. So your going to be up and ready again. You can now use JB weld and put it all back together. I've used it to fix plastic pieces that broke in half lol. As long as nothing is missing and the parts fit right back up the weld will hold. Once you mix put enough on the inside that it splatters out some and put some tape around it and let it dry (just like they did in the video with the aluminum). Then you'll have a nice backup/stock unit for smog.

I wonder what year cars we are seeing cp failure? I wonder if they changed polymer thickness when then changed to the longer style cp pipe? Just a thought.

Even with cp failure the car is completely drivable, we do not have a mass air type system, so besides having limited boost and annoying as hell you would have no problem getting home.

Many of us went with an aftermarket CP when our plastic stock CP exploded due to elevated boost levels. It's a 'must have' mod if you don't intend on leaving the car stock...otherwise it will break sooner or later.

So get this. I bought the upper charge pipe to replace the old leaky one. went to put it in last night, and it's a different damn connection than the old one; they did away with the rubber flex hose bend and replaced it with hard plastic. So, as a result, I now had to buy the LOWER charge pipe too, even though its in perfectly fine condition.

Why can't BMW just keep parts so they FIT>?!?!?!

Decided to bite the bullet and ordered the er intercooler with free cp deal going on right now.

Of course, now that I said that, it'll probably blow before my install appt next Friday. Lol

Sorry to bump this month old thread but I have the same question as Glowin. Are the BOV really worth it? I live in Cali and think I'll get away with just a black charge pipe but don't have the money to get a BOV with one right now. Also, have a BOV sticking out of my charge pipe is definitely going to draw the smog tech's attention towards it and I am definitely not going to go through the trouble of replacing my stock charge pipe for smog testing no matter how easy the swap is.
