The AFE stage 2 intake has 2 issues: It doesn't produce the power of the other intakes and is susceptible to heat soak.
And I hear you need a washer to seat the MAF properly in the intake to work properly. The sound will probably be orgasmic though. |

Axiom is right. The sound is amazing but the power sucks. All short ram intakes will lose low end power from heatsoak, but the open AFE intake loses power from heatsoak and the MAF sensor issue. You have to get or make a spacer to fix the MAF issue
Of course if you don't really care about the power and you just want the sound then it doesn't matter. The open AFE sounds mean as hell. When you do a high rpm downshift people will turn around and look to see what you are driving (excellent for scaring the living shit out of punk ass jaywalkers). It doesn't sound like your typical japanese car with an intake. It's more exotic. I have a full magnaflow catback with secondary cat deletes and over 3000pm, I can't hear any of it because the AFE intake is so loud. But honestly if I were to do it over again, I wouldn't buy the AFE unless I can get it used. If I'm paying full retail price for something brand new I can get an Injen which is just as loud and as far as I know doesn't have MAF issues. It may not be quite as "exotic" sounding, but I love Japanese cars anyway. I also have a Honda with an AEM intake and I love the sound of that too. I was thinking about getting the Euro intake with a K&N round filter but apparently there is no sound from that set up. And the peak rpm horsepower increase from the Injen is around the same as a stock intake with drop in filter and charcoal delete. But the modified stock intake won't lose low end power from heatsoak. So that's what I'm running now. I have a lot more power now but no sound. Not from the intake anyway. I still have my magnaflow exhaust. I guess I'll have to use that to scare off jaywalkers from now on haha |

Well, I never tested a Stage 2 AFE, only the SI - the the Injen intake did make more low end power than all of the intakes.

Sealed AFE intake won't be as loud either but I'm pretty sure it's louder than my modified airbox. There isn't really an intake that has the most sound and the most power. The best power comes with the sealed boxes, especially for a 0-60 run. So that's AFE SI, Eurobox, BMW PI or even just my modified stock air box. You want loud you gotta go Injen or the open AFE intake (preferably with a spacer). Over 60 mph, the open intakes will probably do a bit better than a BMW PI or the modified airbox since the heatsoak won't be much of an issue at those speeds and the BMW PI and modified air box use flat filters instead of round/cone filters. I think you made a good choice if want a balance between sound and power. Between the sealed boxes the AFE is probably the loudest. But personally I would try to avoid any more AFE products after they screwed up the first intake. I mean losing horsepower to heat soak is normal for short ram intakes. But losing power because nobody at AFE's R&D took out a ruler to measure the height of the OEM MAF sensor mount and make sure it was the same on an intake they charged me $400 for, that's pretty ridiculous. And yes there is spacer to fix the problem now, but the fix isn't from AFE and it isn't free. Someone on e90post decided to take out a ruler and build his own spacer to bring the MAF to the proper height. |

spending $500 on an intake for these cars is stupid, imo. you can get an AA tune for that much, and gain way more power than an intake would give you. especially on a 325i.

Honestly just jump the gun, seems like your asking a bunch of run around questions. If you want a cheap intake k&n filter + charcoal filter delete or just jump the gun on the si. If you jusg want sound then dinan has a ram air for about 200 bux. Adding an intake alone to a 325i will probably give u 5whp at the most best to save up and do a bunch of mods at the same time. 3stage im/intake/exhaust set up and tune.

I would get the Dinan Ram air intake upgrade, it's like $200 or something around that. It comes with a K&N air filter too. Gets a lot more air into your engine which equals more power.
