The car displays a persistent "check control messages" icon in the lower cluster display, and a more descriptive - but temporary - problem-specific icon in the upper cluster display. This is nothing new. halB described the icons that appear in the upper display. Because it's possible that multiple "problems" exist, you can opt to check control messages when the little triangle is present; this will display each problem's icon in the upper display.

In auto transmissions, the selected gear/mode appears in the lower display. So:
