1. It is high HTHS oil with some 4.4cp. N54 needs 3.5-4cp. What you doing is creating unnecessary heat and drag. Your turbos need bit more time to spool. Basic rule if lubrication: as thin as possible, as thick as necessary. 2. Sport is only API certified, which mean Noack limit is 15%. N54 has issues with CBU and you might be contributing more than necessary. 3. BMW engines are oxidation monsters. Sport is ester based which means it has higher oxidation than street oil. Sport is good oil if you spend a lot if time at the track and when I mean a lot, I mean every weekend. Get Castrol Edge 0W40! |

If EU country, go LL04 oil. N engines were always LL04 in Europe. If you want thicker oil go Motul X-Clean 5W40 GEN2. It has HTHS of 3.9cp. LL04 is Low-SAPS oil and it will reduce amount of CBU on your intake valves. Not prevent it, but reduce it. |

Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40, Motul X-Cess 5W40 GEN2, Quaker State Euro 5W40 (repackaged Pennzoil) and Valvoline European Vehicle 5W40 are all better. QS Euro goes $18 for 5qt on Wal Mart web site. |

I went with Liqui Moly 5w 40 a week ago, liking it so far. First time I deviated from the castrol 5w 30. Gosh dang it runs smooth, it maybe a little placebo but it sure seems smoother. Then again the N52, is by far the smoothest engine ive ever driven. Its just the definition of smooth and refined. Ill tell you something else that works that I use, and this will probably stir up controversy but who cares and that is liqui molly ceratec. It makes my engine smoother, quiter and it feels just fraction more responsive and thats just my experience. I love the stuff!!

Strange I did read all this thread and only few is using Amsoil oil. Amsoil oil is best at all categories, and been some tested and none of even come close. Typically engines is using Amsoil oil no oil consumption or reduce by far.

I think some people (like me) may be turned off that it's MLM. I personally use Motul 8100 which is what my tuner recommended. It's excellent oil for the N54. Some prefer Rotella which is also a badass oil for super cheap. Others have excellent results on Mobil1 from Walmart. FCP has tons of Liqui Moly which can be done with the lifetime replacement program. Others stick with BMW oil from the dealer. FWIW, I have zero oil consumption ever and my temps are down by 20+ deg under all conditions with the Motul vs Liqui Moly or Mobil1. Lots of good choices out there and not really a wrong one. People will argue all day about what's best but most good oils within a class are very, very close. |
