1) Someone posted pics of the slits in this thread. If still cannot find,
ask again and I'm sure someone will post a pic.
they are not open holes. you need to touch to feel where they are.

2) torque r. is used to tight the nut that holds the steering wheel to the steering column.

Look for the slits on your new wheel, and then it will be easy to find them.. they are actually just holes covered with leather that is precut to allow a screwdriver to slide through.

To answer my own question, my dealer installed today my M3 tricolor wheel. I replaced the non sport wheel. My bottons are labeled different on the right side, but they work as before, except the up/down only works up. The dealer said its the software and needs to be recoded on the next visit. I think maybe if it works up and not down it could be a conection issue maybe? Any help out there? Oh the wheel feels amazing.
I understand that there are 2 sets of multi function buttons, depending on whether or not you have idrive.

Excellent tutorial which allowed me to do the job in around 20mins. But just a small word of warning to anyone doing this job. When I fitted mine the airbag light came on 2 days later. I then discovered that the brown earth wire from the airbag connector was very slightly loose, this was not caused by me failing to tighten the small screw but actually the hole in the new wheel was a fraction shallower than the original, which when I tighten the screw tight actually left the wire slighty loose. So if doing this job make sure the earth wire is tight not just the screw. Lucky for me the car is still under warranty and the dealer reset the airbag light after I refitted the original wheel (although I did forget to tell them I had the steering wheel off although if the new wheel had had the hole the right depth this would not have happened.)

2 questions, sorry if these have been answered but i dont want to read through 20 pages of posts,

1) Does the sport airbag work on the m-sport steering wheel)

2) What is the procedure for hooking up the paddle shifters?

1) Yes, it's the same airbag.
2) There are some pictures here that demonstrate. It looks rather straight forward.

Stat Question....

My SA called and said they don't know how the airbag attaches to the column. I am switching from non-sport to the m-sport wheel. I purchased the airbag from Tischer (assuming some sort of connector or module was included, based on reading this thread). Was I incorrect? Do I need another part?

Did you also get the Airbag bracket?
That does not come with the airbag and needs to be replaced too.

After my idiot moment I realized what happened: The Ebay seller, that we all use, sells the wheel and nothing else. The metal bracket that the airbag snaps into comes on the wheel normally, not with the airbag. Everyone with sport wheels at baseline just swaps this out to the new wheel. My non-sport wheel obviously has nothing to re-use. So, I have since found an M sport wheel at Tischer (with the bracket attached) and have it on order.

I will have a brand new M sport wheel for sale...

Thanks Frank!

So, I've been driving around all weekend with the new wheel. The car drove so much better...It's fun making hairpin turns...Excellent DIY...But, after all my excitement with installation, it's a little anti-climactic. Now I have nothing to look forward to. I guess I need to find my next mod...

another new M wheel installed

Thanks to Bavarian19 for the great write up, and the photos posted above showing where the openings for removing the airbag are located. Took me a while though; I suppose i am a newbie to this sort of a thing. one of the springs on the back side of the steering wheel fell off, and i didnt notice it. everything was fine at the beginning, but after 6-7 miles, the horn started going off evertime i turned it more than 1/2 a turn either way. opened up the thing and put the spring back, but this time, it was much faster. have to test it now. here are some pics:
