The grille has grown on me seeing it in person. It wouldn’t stop me from owning one, anyway. The main reason I bought my M2C instead of a base G80 manual is that the G80 is nearly an M5 now in size, and it’s also too fast for the road. I have trouble remembering not to lose my license in the M2. With a full-tune S58 in G8x comp package it would be just a hammer you can’t use unless you’re feeling lucky.

Since you’re a E86 owner, I don’t think BMW is going to have much left for you. Even my M2C doesn’t have that seating position or packaging of a true sports car. I am hoping to drive a Supra sometime but I passed on them because no manual. If the pandemic didn’t throw a wrench into things I’d have gotten a 997.2 C2S or 981 Cayman S and called it a day.

I’m actually looking forward to an electric Boxster. It could be awesome.

Interesting. This the first I've heard someone say they're excited for an electric P car.

Pretty much anything past about 300 hp, falls in that category. About the only time you can use them in real life is blasting up an onramp and then shutting it down as you approach traffic.

That depends heavily on where one lives. I've gotten the tires on my Z4MC up to the greasy zone on public roads, and I was really only putting myself at risk while doing so.

Yeah, but there are levels. In my Z4M you could wind it out a bit longer and end up at 100 instead of 130 or 140 like you would be in a G80.

Yeah, but there are levels. In my Z4M you could wind it out a bit longer and end up at 100 instead of 130 or 140 like you would be in a G80.

I am not particularly excited about an electric 911, but I do think an electric roadster could be interesting. If the weight can be kept down enough, the very low center of gravity and torque could make for a fun car. It won't be a Spyder or GT4 experience with the engine, but it could be its own thing.

Converted ICEV platforms only get half the benefit of going EV.

The other half (getting S class interior space in an E class sized car-- E.g. the model S can have 3 seat rows AND a FRUNK) they miss out on completely.

i4 is not a bespoke EV platform, and therefore missing half the benefit IMO.

... and it's almost 4700 lbs(!)

Also, assuming you meant me, not sure what I said you thought was insulting...

I sort of agree. I'm sure it drives well, but right now given the charging network and bespoke platform, I would have trouble convincing myself to get an EV that isn't a Tesla. Problem is, I don't really want a Tesla.

Assuming you can charge at home, the charging network is really only something you worry about before you own an EV. It's fine, and also almost never comes up (if you can charge at home).

For me, the EV to beat is the Lucid Air. It is the only car (so far) that is good dynamically (fun fact: e39 M5 was their dynamics target, and a significant number of the engineering team personally owns e39 M5s) AND takes advantage of EV packaging benefits (S class interior space in an E class sized car).

When they release it with a smaller battery (lighter, more back seat leg room, cheaper, 500 miles of range is silly), it's probably in my future.

My 2022 model 3 is still holding up strong after like 3 months.

Funny enough, I just got my registration renewal in the mail for the EV we got rid of. I noticed the fee seemed high, $179, not including the taxes. Below that in small text read "Registration fee includes a $130 electric charge." Huh...they gotta make that road/gas tax back somehow I guess.

Could be true, except my friend with the same car at 8 months has better build quality so far than my m3.

BMW hasn't had great build quality in a few decades. Sure the leather may feel nice, but I include reliability as a part of build quality.

When it comes to chassis and engine, pretty darn good, but Toyota or Honda level good? Nope. Better handling and faster, but not "fit and finish" better.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "build quality". Look and work as designed for a long long time? No, that's Toyota and Honda. Work beautifully like a finely tuned symphony when new, and then stuff starts breaking 1-2 years in? That's BMW.

Wasn't there a rumour that Toyota was handed BMW's engine for the Supra, stuck it on a test bench and BMW said yeah she is good to go..... Toyota then shot back with an arm long list of shit that needed changing, mostly plastic parts to metal? Also BMW kept questioning why they kept relentlessly testing it day in, day out, under different simulated conditions

I wouldn't be surprised if EXACTLY that happened.

That's why I don't ever see me having a BMW again unless its a new one on lease or I somehow stumble across a cheap E30 worth saving.
