Took stock of how much material ive used and the weight added to the car so far Torgus

4 cartons of sound deadener at 7 kg each
Plus 1m of mass loaded vinyl at 4 kg per metre
Plus 2.5m of acoustic foam liner which is pretty light so add on a kg for that
So the grand total so far is roughly 33 kg

That's covering every inch of exposed metal in the boot area to the back seats, including the boot lid

Still have the main cabin, doors and headliner to go

At this rate, the final weigh in will be somewhere between 70 and 90 Kg
Will be like carrying an extra passenger around with you all the time

Ill keep a tally and let you know mate

Moved onto the main cabin, starting with the side door cards and the rear panel skin.

Ok moving onto the main cabin
First step, strip it down to the metal including the roof

Has been a week since I last posted on this project. Have almost finished the sound deadening of the main cabin. Making progress

Not planning to remove the dash but I am rerouting and wrapping all the wiring I can access and sound treating as far up the firewall as I can go

Have been working on the main cabin over the last two weeks, laying down the butyl sound dampener layer on the floor, transmission tunnel and fire wall.
To apply the sound dampener, all the wiring had to be removed, so took the opportunity to wrap everything in new tesa tape and re-route things like the reverse camera, dash cam and the NBT harness.
Will be a couple of months before I can reinstall the headunit, because the NBT emulator is fried and had to order another one from euro.

Meanwhile have finished treating the rear door cards and have made a start on the fronts
Is a slow process, but have done the sound dampening on both fronts and the acoustic foam layer on one

Still have to do the sound blocking layer in the main cabin, treat the doors and put everything back together again. Still a good two or three weeks of full time work ahead. Hopefully we are out of stage 4 lock down by then

Front door cards are done and reinstalled.
Was tough getting everything to squeeze in there
At one stage the thickness of the wires was preventing the door card from going on, but managed to route the wires behind the arm rest and got everything to fit. Can feel the extra weight in the doors when you open and close them. happy with the result.. now onto the main cabin floor

Final stage, sound treatment of the cabin area and reinstalling the carpets, consoles, trim and seats

Used two types of mass loaded vinyl as a sound barrier, a heavy duty version for the floor/firewall and a lighter version for around the transmission tunnel.
Started by cutting out pieces to fit the section of the floor pan, then top of the transmission tunnel and then the sides. Used tape to seal the gaps
Hardest part was fitting around the firewall area and accelerator pedal.

Getting the carpets and consoles back in was a struggle because the added material made everything very tight. Had to sit on the floor and push the carpet in with my legs to get it to fit in the front footwells. With a little trimming here and there it eventually all went back into place

With the seats in the project was finally done

Well almost, the car wouldn't start
Turns out the material in the drivers side footwell was preventing the clutch from going all the way back and triggering the ignition signal (sigh) So with a little more trimming, that problem was sorted

Took it for a test drive to see what impact the sound treatment had on the noise level in the cabin.....will post the results soon

So finally got SPCGRY back on the road for a test drive after finishing the sound treatment.

In summary added 106.5kg of weight, took 240 hrs to complete and cost $1847 in materials

I really wish I had taken the time to do this earlier.

External sound is cut down by around 85% especially exhaust drone and road noise

Engine noise is still present but sounds a lot cleaner (without the rattles etc)

Noise from the aircon fan and window gaps is more noticeable but have addressed the window noise by adjusting the door plate

Hard to describe but the audio is more detailed and does not need to be so loud on the vol dial to hear it clearly

Overall very happy

Ill post the wrap up vid, meanwhile here is a short snip to show the difference the sound treatment made

Do you have any plans on putting this material on the underside of the hood and maybe under the engine cover? Can it handle those engine heat temperatures?

Edit: Just checked out carbuilders.com site and I see they have dedicated engine bay products.

Good question

I thought about it, but am a bit concerned about heat management under there
The 7670 generates a lot of heat so adding sound treatment might cause issues
I did treat the firewall in the cabin as far as I could, which has significantly reduced the engine noise

Really did all of this to get rid of all the rattles and stuff before tuning the audio system (no point in tuning the system if all the detail is hidden by exhaust drone and road noise)
Now the sound treatment is done, I can start working on the tune and share how to do time alignment, set cross overs etc etc, for those peeps interested in that kind of stuff

I have no idea what I'm doing so wish me luck haha

Fantastic result Socks! That vacuum cleaner was barely heard, whisper quiet inside.
The extra 100kg of weight would bother me though - do you feel it dynamically in the car? Obviously there's enough power to push it along, but more through the corners?

Sound wise, which was clearly your goal, that's a win. Now I wonder if you can hear police sirens as they chase you down...
