Metallic Ticking noise coming from engine?

Completely agree with "Profits are up with the E90 release, but they could pay a log term price if they fail to adequately take care of the issue. I don't see it resolving itself."
I was BMW admirer long time and excited is not the right word to describe how felt getting this car. Now I am considering alternatives going to my next lease.
From previous models I expected some minor electrical problems, plastic creeks, etc but engine problems with brand new engine is a pretty big surprise for me. The way BMW handles this is even bigger surprise.

It's not easy to find such an excellent all purpose machine as 3-series, but for my next lease I will certainly make efforts to find one.

The next gen A4 and TL are pretty good contenders imo. They might not handle like an e90, but you get a nice interior and a fair amount more standard options (TL only).

Anyways, back to the ticking. After the dealer performed the bleeding, I haven't heard it for a week. I'm hoping it'll be gone but my gut tells me other wise. Either way, I plan to trade it for something else once the 4 yrs are up.

Fun factor is one of the key considerations for me, therefore handling is the most critical part.

After I got my car bleeded it ticked the next day. I did the "bleeding" my-self and it's been quite for a week now, but even the service rep confirmed bleeding itself will not make it permanently go away.

If you took your car (while ticking) to the previously owned side of your dealership for a trade in evaluation I wonder if they would consider the ticking "normal"?

When I traded my car in the guy walked around my car, ran it for 10 seconds and that was it.
My guess is it will be next owner problem as opposed to dealership.

i dont think so.
i when last week got some recall bs and bleedout but it came back. next week i will go again maybe there will be something changed not just a bleedout

Googled the recall but came up empty handed. Anyone with access to the bulletins have the link?

Cyliner head replacement is the only cure I know about.

I had the bleeding and the ticking started the next day. I believe the bulletin is attached in this thread. I had it in my back pocket when I took my car in and told the SA about the service bulletin. He said there wasnt one. So, I pulled it out, he really didnt know how to respond then. Mine is ticking now daily so I will bring it back in the next week or two.

Yeah, there is a bulletin 11 09 07, but that is for the bleed procedure. There have been rumors for some time that another fix is on its way, but so far they remain rumors.

Depending on how loudly you complain determines whether you get the bleed procedure or a new cylinder head - if that is the way you want to go.

I definetly have a rougher cold idle than I had before the head replacement. At first it was first thing in the morning, now it is everytime the car has been sitting for a few hour. And I'm in 75 - 80 deg weather in S Fl so it isn't because of drastic temperature changes.

I too now experience ticking upon cold start. I usally hear it when I start it first thing in the morning and just like most people have mentioned here it goes away after a couple of miles of driving. I have a 07/07 build. I am very frustrated since I only have 2500 miles on the car and I just had the High Preassure Fuel Pump replaced and now this ticking noise. This just does not seem right for a car this expensive.

Sorry to hear that. You could take it to the dealer, but odds are pretty good nothing will happen. If you haven't read this thread already, I'll just let you know that all you need to do to get it to stop is drive on the interstate for a while. The 'bleeding' procedure is essentially just that. High (2500-3000) rpms for 20ish minutes. Should keep it from ticking for about a week.
But we all do agree, this should not be happening on a BMW. It's most certainly not a normal noise. We can all just hope that they figure out how to fix it without screwing up our engines in the process.

Bleeding HVA elements (3rd cycle)
Hydraulic tappet clearance compensation

G.O.G. & SUPPLIES:
1.0 MECH PART KIT P1256-569S

Does any-one about this kit?

Why would any mechanical parts will be needed to perform bleeding?

I'm guessing its because of their outdated software. Every "problem" from the customer needs to be responded by their "solution" which is listed by a "parts number". They can't simply put "problem resolved" from what I've seen of their 1990 style gui system.

Well, after talking with the GSM, he called BMW Canada and will be arranging to have one of their techs come look at the car, whenever that is. The bleeding is the most that the dealer can perform and anything else needs to be authorized or done by BMW Canada. So now I have to wait for them to schedule a BMW Corp Tech.
