Is that 20G gen 3? If so, it is not fully compatible. Gen 4 and higher are compatible.

BMW removed gen3 ipods from the list of products that will work with the kit.

Did you ask him to provide a document from BMW that verifies it? Everything thing I have read from BMW and on this forum is that 3rd generation is not supported by the MOST adapter. As JSpira posted it may not be FULLY compatible.

SA's are swamped and do not know every fine point on many issues. For instance, when I dropped off my car for an oil change my SA's key reader would not read my Comfort Access Key. I suggested maybe the battery needed replacement. He told me it was recharged by the car. I told him CA keys don't recharge and need periodic replacement. He didn't have time for me to show him the manual and pretty much blew me off. Later I sent him an e-mail with the manual reference and his response was an apology and included "I had never heard that - thanks for the info." These guys are trying to get all models of cars in and out as fast as possible. He may have just told you what you want to hear to make you go away.

BMW took gen 3 iPods off the compatibility list after extensive testing. They wouldn't have done this - esp. since they originally announced they were compatible - without finding out there were problems.

I am not so sure I ca agree with that..

On the BMW compatability list.... My Nokia 6230 is only listed as partially compatable. Yet I have not managed to find a single thing that does not work... I think that BMW only lists it this way due to it being an older model and not testing it fully. It could well be that the 3G iPod is in the same position. So unless a clearer reason for it not being compatible is given by BMW, I would say, that a good guide would be to let the owners of 3G Ipods with the MOST install, let us know what they find works and or doesn't.

I don't see the 6230 on either the current list or the previously available list. In addition, partially compatible sometimes means that it depends on what sw level your mobile is. If yours is the correct level, then it is compatible.

Why the cynicism.. I am only stating what I have found....

I was not saying that it had not been removed from a compatability list, moreover I was refering to the implication that if it is not on a compatability list, it will not work.

Also, there is at least one post from someone who has a 3G iPod that says it is working fine see here... hence my ' lets' hear from more owners' remarks....

Regarding the phone, Try looking Official UK Compatability list here. This the official BMW Blue tooth compatability list for the UK. You can clearly see the 6230 is listed as limited... but it works fully.

Also, the software revision level is the minimum level to get limitied functionality... I know this because my phone was below this level and until I got the stated level, it did not work at all!!

There is an explanation somewhere that explains that sometimes testing older models is not done to an extensive degree.. and as such it is only given limited status...

This is a U.S. BMW forum (with lots of people from around the world who come to it) and you didn't mention that you were working off the U.K. chart. I have no idea what BMW U.K. does in terms of testing and how they rate compatibility.

It is very possible they did not test the combination of your mobile and your TCU (I'm testing 25 mobiles right now - on E9x only with Progman 24 - and it's a mess in some respects). They might have tested your sw level on an earlier version of CIP or Progman and found some limitations.

Your experience with the mobile still has little bearing on the fact that BMW announced the iPod Interface WITH support for gen 3 iPods and then very sheepishly had to withdraw that. They wouldn't withdraw that "support" and look silly without good reason.

Here is a quote from an e-mail from a manager at BMW to me:

"Very late in the testing program of the Interface, it was found that it is not compatible with Gen. 3 and earlier, and the Shuffle.*"

He goes on to say that product development continued to and beyond the intro of the product and that resulted in changes which inadvertently made these devices incompatible.

So your saying your 6230 has your entire A-Z address book listed in phone book when you connect? I have a 6230 and Progmann v24 in the US and my 6230 has never allowed me to see the address book. Everything else works fine. So how does yours work?

So I started my own thread (most ipod instruc. blow) about issues I'm having with the Ipod kit and rlc has been the only member to give me any feedback. Anyways these are some of the issue's that I'm personally bothered with.

1. Why doesn't the kit read that ipod as if it were an external HD, similar to a computer? It would read faster, and not have to "load" the info. Thus eliminating the problem with only showing certain amounts of artists and songs. They run fiber optics which should allow for quicker loading. My external HD loads 40 gigs of music, videos and pics in 20 seconds. Why not our BMW?

2. Why did they not incorporate a funtion to scroll by alphabet? If you spin the dial on the ipod fast enough it begins to jump by letters, showing this as a possible feature.

3. Why is it that you can't use the ipod once connected? Yes, I know people will argue that's defeating the purpose of the kit. BUT for those like myself without iDrive kills your arm to scroll with the far right knob to go all the way to the way down to a lower letter, also the need for alphabet jumping.

So far I'm glad I only payed $200+tax installed. And everyone that whined about the AUX function not being enough sound quality, ARE YOU CRAZY??? Clean your ears, or buy a better aux cable, or download better quality music. It sounds very close to the quality of the most kit and until BMW makes more inprovements is not worth $500.

I'm most surprised that BMW would release a product that seems to only be 80% complete.

Excuse me but I don't have time to read 24 pages of this thread. If it was already covered, point me to the correct page and I'll shut up.

That was the exact problem I had until I took my mobile to carphone wharehouse in the UK and had it reprogramed to version 5.5 on the phone.

To check what version of software your phone is on press

*#0000#

Mine displays

Nokia 6230
v05.50
07-07-05
RH-12
GSM P1.1
(c) NMP

Once the phone was upgraded ( it cost me $60 ) to do it was fine instantly. You may wonder why bothering to pay that much when a new phone was as cheap, but the phone is a corporate phone which I am obliged to use, so it was easier to upgrade it.

It works perfectly for all functions now.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Even though it took a significant portion of my Saturday to read through ALL of the posts. I now have a much better idea of the issues surrounding this interface kit. Although it may be tough to find one, I'm going to see if my dealer has this kit installed on any new cars on the lot. I would like to take my ipod in and play with the interface before I plunk down the $500-$800 for it. I have to admit that when I heard about this in the summer, i was ready to jump right in as soon as I could. I'm glad I waited and got the benefit of everyone elses experience. Thanks again for all the great info!

Wow, I can't believe my thread is close to 30.000 views. It seems like just yesterday when I got the first iPod interface - but it was back in June 2006. And now lots of people have gotten theirs installed.

(Great that Golfguy read the entire thread yesterday! )

Are there any cosmetic changes to the dash or wires exposed once the install is completed? I know there is a new wire in the center console... other than that?

I had mine installed in June and there were zero issues. The only issue that came up since was an incompatibility with a version of Progman but that´s history.

Mine has the clickwheel, so I believe it is the 4th Gen Ipod.

I researched it here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...688#clickwheel

So it should be compatible...

You had me scared for a second... I thought I was going to need a new ipod as well...

I'll probably wait for two things: 1) for them to finish what they started and make the menu options more than "CD01, CD02, etc." and; 2) for it to become a factory install option. Maybe then I'll put it in my next E9x.
Gosh, I love it when one of my rantish statements actually comes to reality! Whoda thunkit??

Nobody replied to this. It seems like a pretty big limitation of this. Can anyone confirm?
