70% of BMW owners lease (source: https://www.cartelligent.com/blog/wh...e-lease-or-buy), so your math isn't quite working out.

If you really think a study 10 years ago still matters, get a new source. I literally just read an article that told a much different story for average income for luxury car drivers. BMW has grown so much since 2007, the average salary you posted no longer is relevant.

I am too lazy to care to find sources, but if you think there aren't a ton (I say easily over half) of people that lease luxury cars because they can't afford to buy them, I think you're wrong. I Don't care to argue though, so you're right.

You also combined findings of 2 studies, both of which I'd argue are garbage sources. Just because they say BMW owners earn an average of $149,000 in 2007, doesn't mean that coincides with the % lease number you quoted. The studies are too old and/or are not referencing the same timeframe.

True, 5 years ago it jumped up to almost $170k/year (http://www.mymoneyblog.com/driving-a...education.html).

But what do I know with sources and the simple math that if 70% of BMW owners lease their car and the average annual income of a BMW owner is, as of 5 years ago, $170k/year, then it would be mathematically impossible to have the typical BMW lessee make $30k or some other low annual salary? I'm just a stupid guy.

I should just take your word for it and your made up stats.

But seriously, these stats coupled with the fact that to lease a BMW, you have to have great credit (statistically, someone making $30k and in a hypothetical wants to drive a new BMW, likely makes more financial decisions and would have poor credit) and in addition, you have to have credit history that shows you've paid off large purchases before means that people who lease cars, still have to make a decent amount of money.

I also was just talking about leasing in general, not just BMWs, so you gotta

I might have overstated it, but leasing is a great tool for buying cars you can't afford.

Yeah it may apply to leasing in general but in my experience, people who lease luxury cars don't seem to be hurting for money.

I don't really know anyone who leases Civics or anything so I can't speak to that.

I honestly don't even believe the research you quoted anyway. Not to be even more argumentative, but the chart says the average income for BMW drivers is $169k and only 29% have a college degree. Average income in the US is 45k. What are these people with no college degree and BMWs doing for a living?

I think this JD power data is a survey of self reported, garbage data.

You know- total double standard I'll admit, but I find any girl who drives a BMW, audi, MB etc to be a turn off.
