That looks like metal because I can see the horizontal brushed finish marks in the photo. The plastic titan trim kit definitely has no brushed effect, it's just a smooth, satin finish.

Don't tell them you're not ready if you truly need time, you are able to reserve a car for 7 days for a test drive. I've done that with them to buy time, then you can also request a free transfer to another local carmax, so have them send it to Parker or one of the Denver locations.

At a minimum reserve it online or over the phone right now, no obligation or risk on your end.

*edit - I see it's been reserved already, hopefully that's for you

Okay guys, I checked out that MSport yesterday down in Colorado Springs for about 2 hours. Some good and some bad news.

Good News
- For other prospective buyers, I will be backing out tomorrow and releasing the hold.
- Interior is MINT
- New tires (?) not my preferred brand/tire but nevertheless they are new
- Great color combo
- Vehicle presents well
- Underneath looked good from what I could see on the ground on my back
- Handled well, steering is sporty and on heavier side
- Mileage is 63,5k

Bad News
- Vehicle has been in accident (Nov'20). CarMax uses AutoCheck and the accident does NOT come up. I pulled a Carfax while I was there and there is indeed an accident. This actually validated my other concerns when I looked over the vehicle for about 40 mins.
- Paintwork: Front passenger side fender, lower bumper, rear driver fender/trunk. The paint on the front lower passenger bumper is not good at all. Rear driver fender you can see the paint is soft and those auto car washes have left scratches
- Passenger headlight looks to be replaced with an old faded headlight. Probably replaced as a cheap fix due to the accident
- Looked to be a small Valve Cover Gasket leak developing
- Brake rotors could use a change
- Decent chip in windshield (most likely need to just fill before it cracks and spreads)
- AutoCheck and Carfax say 1-owner but it really is at least 2. There is ZERO history from 2011-2017 and no registered owner. Not sure why that is? Maybe a dealer car for 6-7 years but nevertheless an uneasy feeling for me.


Normally stuff like this does not scare me from buying a vehicle, the accident is listed as minor, and it is a 10+ year old vehicle. It is rare and not many come around, but there is a reason it is at CarMax. They have no idea what it is and are not willing to work on price. They stand by their AutoCheck and don't really care if Carfax has an accident listed. They even did some of the paintwork themselves and removed dents. But for $18k (which I believe is a premium for AWD/Auto) I would expect to have a clean history with no red flags. If this thing was $15k I would be showing you pictures right now of it in my garage. This will be tough to walk away from but I just didn't get warm and fuzzies when I kept finding little things and they were clueless about it all.

And side note: holy hell these things are underpowered! Is it really that sluggish? Have to give it a lot of throttle to get going?

Updates on my totaled wagon:

Got them to roughly double the valuation based on comps, but they are still considering it totaled.

I'm making a "for sale as is" post with as much detail as I can right after this to see if anyone wants the salvage. If I take the salvage, they are not paying me for the roof items (crossbars, cargo box, and bike rack), effectively making the salvage $3.25k since it is not worth it to tow the car back just to get those items.

I'm asking $5.25k, firm, as that's what it'll take to be worth my while and not just take the insurance money. If this doesn't pan out and someone finds and picks it up on the insurance auction, I'll be happy to discuss the car with them and mail paperwork/random parts that I have or whatever.

The car is >400 miles away from me, so pics will be limited.

You're at altitude...what did you expect? The first e91 M sport manual I had was in CO, and coming from an a4 avant with a 2.0T engine and an older allroad with the 2.7T engine, the NA N52 felt like a total dog. Even when I moved back to the midwest, it didnt feel much peppier at 800ft of elevation. But man, is that manual gearbox with that engine silky smooth...just have to rev her a little deeper in the range.

Sounds like you need a f31 in your life tbh. I love mine - not much slower (feeling) than my last e90 M3.

I drive mine in manual mode 100% of the time, using paddle shifters. Otherwise, the AT shifts too early, IMHO.

I recall reading somewhere that the auto trans cars start in 2nd gear from a stop. Another piece is the programming of the pedal as well. You can use a pedal tuner to adjust the mapping to be more responsive.

I have a 6MT and an automatic E91 and the 6MT *feels* a lot quicker and more responsive. It's hard to say how much of that is placebo vs. if it actually is quicker. FWIW I have a PE, 3IM, and software on my 6MT.

230hp/200tq in a 3,500+ lb car, when paired with an older automatic, is not exactly a recipe for a sporty drive, though. For as boring as I find modern cars to drive, the new 8-speed auto transmissions coupled with turbos certainly make cars feel quicker off the line.
