Great close-up Ed and only about a 30% crop with the bare 500mm.
Impressive.

Thanks guys! I had seen him on a sign, then he flew into a tree right by the road. That was shot straight up through my sunroof. A technique that has served me pretty well on these NWR auto tour routes where the roads wind through the trees along side the marsh. The raptors hang out there keeping an eye on the water.

Thanks, Ed. It is a very nice building. They did a great job expanding it while retaining the original look and feel.

I love fall in wine country. This room was pretty dark, so it puts the f4 to the test at 3200 ISO

Nice shot, Ed. And for the record, I love wine in all countries. Sort of the same thing, no?

Which software do you use for your B&W conversion. I like that result. I use DxO Filmpack. DxO has dozens of emulations of classic B&W films (color also, but I hardly use those). I like a couple of the Illford emulations.

White-tail Buck Silhouette by dcstep, on Flickr
I didn't work this one much at all, just applied an Illford 100 emulation and lowered the blacks a few points, but not so much to kill all the details on the face and antlers. Looking at it now, I should probably clone out that weed peaking over the horizon on the left of the image. Dave

Juvenile Red-tail In Flight by dcstep, on Flickr
This around a 70% crop of a hand held image taken with a bare 500mm on the 7D MkII. If I'd crop to this size with the full-frame 5D3, it would be showing grain, even at internet size. The more I look at this guy, I think it's a juvenile Northern harrier. (Juveniles always screw me up).
