I am sorry that you have that knocking issue. If they replaced all of the valve lifters than definitely the issue should have been reduced or gone away. I am not really sure exactly what happened in your specific case but I would get a second opinion from a private shop and then possibly go back to your service center that did the original work. In any case good luck and don't give up.

lol then you're posting in the wrong thread! This thread was created over the loud ticking noise that is consistent with the car's RPMs. We all have it, all the dealers say its normal even though it's clearly not. Thanks for posting about the oil though.. I don't think it's the solution we need for this problem, though.

I'm getting this tick from my engine. I took this video from my engine, sorry if its a little blurry and a mess, I was moving the camera around the engine trying to figure out where the sound comes from.
I hear it outside and even when inside my car when its on idle and when I rev the car. I also hear it when I'm driving, regardless of speed. I notice that the ticking goes hand in hand with the RPM of the car and that the repetitions of the ticking gets faster when I rev it. I also took my car out for a spin for a good hard drive and the ticking sound still didn't go away. However its nothing like this: Could my problem be the lifters problem or is it just the normal tick for the 335i? Will bleeding the engine fix this "tick" of mine? Or is it the lifters? |

The first video sounded like lifter chatter where as the second is a distinct ticking. Some people say the chatter is normal, but you can always bring it up during your next service appointment to get it checked out.

I'd trade the ticking for the chatter anyday. Maybe this type of noise is what gentooguy was saying he cured by changing engine oils...

Well, got the car back yesterday. Just 2 days short of 3 weeks in the shop. I haven't heard any ticking so far, but will give it a week or 2 as it has warmed up a bit.

The type of ticking that I had sounded like the following: N54-Idle-Ticking As you can see from the video the ticking is definitely there on idle but not consistent with Revving the engine. This is the ticking that I got to go away with the oil change. I still to this day have no ticking whatsoever. Some of the ticking that that you guys have shown me sounds more like a rod knock and not a tick and it certainly does not sound normal. I really hope you guys get it resolved. |

Its been almost 3 weeks now and no ticking so far. Lets see how long it will last!
btw, people always say "there is no free lunch". Now the service manager is playing the game now. He called me and said BMW want me to sign a paperwork..its a agreement or something. He is not sure about the detail, but once i sign it, then they will start to process it. FU@# IT! I didnt ask for the kit. He is the one who gave me that offer and told me its not a settlement. It's a freebie for my inconvenience. I should've recorded the conversation! I will visit them again when they have the document. |

To get rid of Valvetrain Chatter put in some thinner oil so it gets up to the lifters when cold. Go with fully synthetic and not a blend. Valvetrain Chatter is very common on cars with OHC engines. Even OHV's get it...
also maybe http://jackassofalltrades.com/ticker.html |

my wife's 2006 e90 has the same problem. i'm pretty sure it's the lifter that's making the noise. the first time we took it in, of course they didn't hear it. the second time they said they added more oil and flushed out the hydralic system. when we went to pick it up, it still made the noise.
so, the SA said take it home and he'll contact BMW engineers to find out the fix. he said that he noted it on with our vin # and as soon as he finds from them what the fix is he'll contact us back. hopefully we'll get all the lifters replaced and not hear that noise. the youtube video is exactly the noise we hear, and varies with engine revs...... |

It worked for me. I was about to be helpful and upload the file, but apparently the forum won't allow MP3 uploads. I guess that's why it was zipped to begin with. Try another unzip program?

Mine stopped ticking after 20K miles (current mileage is about 25K). I did get the engine bled 3 times before the car reached 20K mikes though so it could be bleeding or the break-in due to milage or both that worked. So far so good and keeping my fingers crossed.

For those of us with the ticking:
Do you drive on the interstate very often? Do you mainly use your car for short in-town trips or for commuting? It would seem to me that those of us that recognize the ticking the most are the ones who aren't driving at high rpms for a long time (which quiets the ticking). The problem could be in every e90, but only a few of us don't drive on the interstates regularly. Just a thought...

You are very correct on this Alpine. My car only does this if I drive very short distances. The next day when I start it up it will tick almost every time.
If I drive a longer distance it will not tick the next day when I start it up. |
