Hmm... if you have server lockup.. like totally frozen screen... are you sure its mail related?

theres no event log information? have you tried sending a large document into the organization yourself and seeing if you can replicate the situation?

How many users in your company?

Would it make sense to upgrade to exchange 2k3 and run a local spam filter instead of a external service?

How big is your exchange pub and priv database?

That darn Laura Hernandez, the server is flopping an error every second or two failing the processing of her message. The screen totally locks, even if I'm watching Task manager. Store.exe grabs a bunch of CPU time, and I end up with about 100 remoteagentlauncher.exes (Symantec AV) in the process tab.
The server is too old to upgrade to 2K3, and I have a replacement server that I've been migrating accounts to. I only have about 105 accounts. I ran a full offline defrag in Dec because event log told me it was fragmented in a fashion that would lead to less than optimal functionality.

The replacement server I would press into service, but I can't get ISA proxy to function and serve up any pages. I've duplicated teh config from theold one, but can't enter the correct IP address in teh ISA config, it will only let me choose 127.0.0.1

Ouch!

have you tried flushing lauras mail box?

try to do a full outlook backup of her pst and then delete her profile and recreate it. Don't import her old mail yet and have he send the mail messages that seem to be caught.

She might have a corrupt mail box.

Or even run a pst/ost scan on her profile.

With the ISA server i'm not much help there cause i don tuse ISA in our environment.

Laura is someone from outside my Exchange.

Today, on the new server, one of the directors has an email box with ~65 messages but his mailbox size is 3GB!!!! I was having an issue with his PST where all the messages get delivered to. Ran Scanpst and compacted it, fixed things a bit. His computer drive was completely full so I bought a replacement and got so frustrated this am I put a new computer on his desk. Now both he and I are (understandably) having a problem opening his store since it is 3GB. There are not that many items in his box to add up there. Guess I'll be doing some offline defrags this weekend also. . .

It seems like you got some issues with data fragmentation or even just corruption. 3gb mailbox is not a good thing. Especially if you're on a win2k setup. Are you running exchange 2k3?

let me know if you need any help.. maybe i can remote and take a look to see whats going on

Well, it came to a head, as it were, today. "The Exchange database has reached it maximum of 16256KB" Right now I have both database servers offline running defrag, then I'll isinteg. I was going to wait until Presidents day when no one was here, but now I get to go ride my motorcycle that day instead (he hopes) I guess I'll have to initiate quotas and warnings, I doubt City Manager and/or Finance director will let me set limits to send/receive, since they have legitimate mailboxes over 1GB each.

What advantages do you see in 2K3 over 2K, beside more secure OWA? (which we only run internally)

Did you just hit that limit today? I was going to ask you to check that because that would take your mail services offline as well.

My 2k3 is on Enterprise and i have an umlimited amount of database size for my exchange databases

It also works better with my mobile devices and my spam filters

We don't really use OWA here cause we are using HTTP/RPC for our Outlook users who have laptops so they can use Outlook without having to deal with a VPN.

To buy yourself some time, you can extend your limit to 17gb so you can have mail services restored while you are archiving users mail.

And remember! I would remove the retention policy for deleted items during this time because if users start deleting their mail, you database will actually grow due to the retention policy.

Make sure you're on SP3 for 2k Exchange

Click Start, click Run, and then type regedit.exe. Locate the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\MSExchangeIS\\Private- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then type the following in the Value name box: Temporary DB Size Limit Extension Select REG_DWORD for the data type, and then click OK. Enter a value of 1, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor.

The initial temp file after defrag is down to 7gb on the new server with more clients, about 4gb on the original server.

I had disabled retention a long time ago, after attorney instructed us we need to make end users responsible for their tracking. Email policy states that anything deemed necessary for longer than 30 days needs to be printed or stored offline (yeah, that happends) but the CYA portion for SOX is covered as a policy.
