high bit rate mp3's

Guys, for the heck of it, I loaded up some 320 kbps files on a usb drive and popped them in the car. They seem to work fine! Has anyone confirmed having trouble with higer kbps files or are we just taking it for granted since it's in the manual?
I'll be sure to report back if I find otherwise...I'm going to mess with them some more today.

New Issue:

Hey --- I have been reading this thread due to an issue I have been having with my ipod in my E93 with Nav / iDrive and 6FL. I have had the car for 2 weeks and all has been fine until last evening.

First off - it is a 30GB photo iPod 5th generation. It is 2 months old. I got it about 6 weeks prior to getting the car with the intention of only using it in the car. When I received it I fully charged it and then setup ITunes software and downbloaded about 300 albums to it from my digital library. Again all worked fine at that time.

When I received the car I plugged it in with the 6fl cable set (brick and cables for aux and USB connections). The car found it immediately when I went to aux and it worked fine for the past 2 weeks.

Last night I took the iPod out of the car to update the device name and to modify the album / songs loaded on it to make them a bit easier to find. When I turned it on (before I connected it to the PC) I immediately got a dead battery indication and the device would not start up. As someone said earlier I left it charging for a few minutes then did a reset and it came up fine. After I turned it off I connected it to the PC and everythoing was fine. I did my updates etc. and left it plugged in overnight and this AM had a fully charged indication.

I then took it out and plugged it into the car and it would not come up. "Low battery indication" on the iPod display. I did several iPod resets and then finally got to the point where it would come on. I then turned it on and plugged it in. After a few seconds it worked fine again.

During the day today I made several trips with the car and 2 of 6 times I restarted the car the iPod would not come on. Again - low battery indication each timne. After futzing with it it worked again each time.

When I got home I decided to leave the iPod outside the glove box to see if if it operated correctly when the car was turned off. On all but 1 ocassion I found that after 90 seconds the car reemoved power form the iPod (flashing charge indicator demonstrates this) and after an additional 120 seconds the iPod went to sleep (off). On one ocassion the iPod did NOT GO TO SLEEP and although the backlight went off the iPod was STILLL ON AND STAYED ON.

There has been no time in the last 2 weeks where the car has sat idle for more than 1 day.

msimon18 - It sounds like the iPod is not being fed any power when connected to the car. You could be onto something there regarding the mysterious "switching to FM" problem many are having. If the iPod is not getting power to run or charge, then perhaps this is why it losing connection.

Either way, you should report it to the dealership and have them check the USB port for power. If you know someone else with another iPod you might check that too, just to be sure it's not your iPod.

Well, maybe a bit. But, I'd say the difference between the 320 and 196+ is less than the difference between 196+ and 96.

LedZep,

The car is at the dealers now. I have a little 328xi to use for the day. They are installing the alarm and the latest SW as well as checking out a few other things including the iPod.

For kicks, last night, I pulled the iPod out of the armrest holster and left it out on the console so it would be fully visible. I left it connected so I could run a few of my own tests.

On 10 of 10 trials the power to the iPod was removed after ~90 seconds (lightening bolt goes away).
On 2 of 10 trials the iPod went to sleep after another ~120 seconds

I did the same test of the iPod DISCONNECTED from the car without a charger.

On 10 of 10 trials the iPod went to sleep after ~120 seconds.

Not a really good statistical test but ..... there was a difference when the iPod stayed connected to the car via the iPod 6fl cable.

One other thing I noticed is that if the iPod does not come up correctly you also have to DISCONNECT the USB end of the cable from the car and then reconnect it to get the iPod to work again. This tells me that there must be some sort of ACTIVE components in the little BRICK so it is more than just a DUMB ADAPTER.

As luck would have it the SA had brought his 30G iPod photo (same as mine) in with him today so he will run a test using both iPods and see if there is any difference. Will let everyone know what ends up happening after I pick my car up later tonight.

So far I have not had any other issue with the 6fl, the NAV or the voice command system and I have used all extensively over the 2 weeks I have had the car. The iPod always comes up exactly where it left off (unless the battery dies) and I have never had it randomly switch to FM or anything else.

The "BRICK" contains a USB to serial converter. When used with this cable adapter the IPod is controlled via it's serial interface rather than USB.

Ok - got the car back from the dealer after alarm / sw installation --- took all day !!! Now, after the installation, the CA door lock/unlock touch feature deos NOT work and the alarm kicks out a flashing error - I think because the motion sensors are not working. Anyway, as usual, back to the dealer for a second trip for what should have been completed prior to my picking up the car !! Surprised they did not know the alarm was not working correctly.

Anyway, the iPod issue seems to be my iPod, at least according to them. Since I have a battery for it on order I will accept their disgnosis until I get the new battery installed afterwhich I will watch closely to see what happens. Hopefully it will resolve the issue but if it doesn't THEY WILL SEE ME AGAIN !!

Jeez, can't believe they didn't test your alarm before telling you the car was done.
Could be a bad battery in the iPod, maybe it won't take a charge? How old is it?

Not a bad idea. If we compile a list here, I can add them to the top of the thread.

Talked to the Service Manager a few minutes ago. Told him how disappointed I was - second vehicle in 3 years and they still can't repair or install anything right the first time !! Told him I would be there at 10:30 (have an apointment at 9AM) and if it needed to be reprogrammed I expected a similar or upscale convertible to use till I can get mine back. Anyway, just disappointing and a lot of inconvenience.

What works. Here is what I have tried and works for me so far:
- san disk 2 and 4GB thumb drive
- Archos AV420
- iPod Video 30GB

Back from dealer. Still not fully fuinctional.

After 3 attempts to re-program on the third try everythiong finally took. This time the CA features all work but the ALARM STILL DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY. Seems there is an iissue with the HOOD OPEN SWITCH. When open the computer thinks it is closed and when closed the computer thinks it is open.

Under this condition one would think that it MIGHT work correctly if you tried to ARM it with the hood up. Unfortuantelythat does not work either !!

I decided to leave - with the car - and let them do RESEARCH. SEEMS NO ONE HAS REALLY BEEN TRAINED IN THIS VEHICLE AND ALL IS BEING DONE BY OSMOSIS. Who said BMW was not DUMB ??

I will check later this week to see if they learned anything. I had them raise it to a PUMA case.

While I was there I learned that Version 26 SW is now out and avauilable. I tried to get a list of improvements etc. but since they had not installed it yet on their systems they could not print anything out for me. Not sure if that is true but ......

Stay tuned !!

Not sure if this will help, however....

If I remember correctly from my alarm installation paperwork, the hood switch can be tested by:

#1 Opening the hood.
#2 Pulling up on the shaft of the hood alarm switch until it locks into detent.

Maybe your hood switch is in the test position.

Whoops !!

Actually I remember pushing it down myself. Seems it senses open when it really is closed and closed when it really is open. In either position it does not work though. Something else wrong.

Will keep you all posted.

After three visits and three attempts to fix the ipod only getting sound out of the passenger's side speakers they fixed it! They said they were in communication w/ the factory and there was an error in the pins (pinouts?) from the factory ...once they fixed that issue I now have sound coming from all the speakers . Now that I'm able to actually listen to it, I hope I don't experience any of the other issues forum members are going through.
