did this today and failed.
Lessons Learned:
1) Do not get the backing paper on the vinyl wet
2) Remove the shark fin (and the roof rails)
3) DO NOT WET THE BACKING PAPER!!!

Agreed. Maybe I should have capped all of step 13.

I hope yours turned out well.

Great DIY write-up man!
I just got the 3m black gloss vinyl! I'm scared to start though
I want to leave the fin AW. Can I just wrap around, and tuck the wrap in around the fin?

I wouldn't recommend it. You want to start by wrapping the rear as it covers more of the roof. If you have the fin in the way, youll have to cut a slit for it and could possibly stretch/cut the vinyl in the wrong place. Just my opinion.

Good luck whichever way you choose.

13) With your assistant, peel back the rear half of the vinyl. Do not allow the vinyl to fold as it may cause wrinkles or stick to itself. Mist both the roof and the vinyl. Cut off the vinyl backing. (NOTE: do not wet any vinyl backing as it will be a PIA to remove from the vinyl. There's less pictures here as we were focused on the install.

I'm a bit confused. Wont the vinyl backing get wet no matter what since your are wetting the roof. Once you wet the roof your throwing the vinyl over it. I think I mis-understaning something

Perhaps I should say do not wet the paper backing. The paper will then break down and then it's a PITA to remove it from the vinyl.

I'm an idiot.I get it now, I'll make sure the paper backing is removed before misting the roof. Didnt know the backing deteriorates when wet.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Remove the sharkfin even if you dont want to wrap it. Do not get the paper backing wet! You got it! Post pics of finished product!

I'll be using this DIY next weekend hopefully. Gloss black on space grey. Has anyone else learned anything from this DIY?

I highly recommend laying all the vinyl down at once. Takes two people but is way easier overall and helps avoid the problem of getting all the paper backing wet and ruining the vinyl.
