He tries to sell me a new control set that should enable the shifting in D mode for 99$. I don't understand how this can work.

there is no way to learn how to do it. you actually need the new controls for it to work. there is no simple way around that since it's controlled electronically and just adding a wire somewhere won't change that. electronically being the key word... if the new controls are added it will kick in the functionality to shift while in D

Short summary
What do you need. - Steering wheel for paddle shifters (no matter if from a E90, E92, E93, series1 or M) - Paddle shifters (the ones for the E90 have a different part number but they are interchangeable with the ones from the E92) What you don`t need: - a different slipring - new multifunction keys The multifunction keys for steering wheels with shifter paddles have a connector input that is used for the shifter paddles. This is a 3 wire connector. If you cut off those connectors and connect like ska325xi explained in the first post you won`t be needing those new multifunction keys. That colourful drawing on the first post should be removed or corrected. It is basically right but the colors are random. Contact 1 connects to contact 3 of the other shifter paddle, 3 to 1 and 2 to 2 which is ground. In case you don`t want to cut any connectors and want to spend the money for new multifunction keys: someone posted this number: 61319123287. There are at least a dozen of combinations for the mufu keys, depending on what radio you have, if you have a navigation system etc. http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E9...teering_wheel/ Whatever version you get, they will all work the same. The functionality is not in the keys, all are connected in the same way, it is programmed. What`s different is the printing on the keys. So now to actually doing it. At first get yourself crimping pliers. They won`t cost much more than approx. $10-15 and you`ll do the job correctly. Do use the correct connectors and don`t try to hold non fitting pins in the connector with silicone or anything similar – that´s just wrong. The correct BMW part number for the “pin connectors” mentioned in the very first post are - 61 13 0 006 663 female connector - 61 13 0 006 664 male connector Nothing more to add. This was the steering wheel side. For the steering column to shifter side do as described. Those female connectors 61 13 0 006 663 are the same used for pin 2 & 4 of the slipring connector. If you prefer to make a removable wiring you`ll need the original BMW parts: - 2x connector housing socket (12 contacts) 61 13 1 383 736 - 16x bushing contact (female) 61 13 0 006 663 - 14x pin contact (male) 61 13 0 006 664 - 1x connector housing socket (4 contacts) 61 13 8 380 696 - 1x connector housing socket (4 contacts) 61 13 6 925 611 - a bit of wire 0,5-0,75mm² Make 14 short cables with a male contact on one and a female contact on the other end. Take the 12 contact housing sockets and insert contact by contact until each clicks in place One connector takes the female contacts, the other one the male contacts. Note: it is very important to not insert any cables in the housing contacts 2 & 4 (of the connector with the female contacts) and 8 & 10 (of the side with the male contacts). Let these empty ! Make two 40” (1m) long cables and crimp a female contact on one end. Insert it in the free slots 2 & 4 of your 12 contacts connector. (Contacts 8 & 10 over the other side will remain empty). You`ll have 4 short cables with contacts on remaining. Connect each of the long cables made to one of the short cables. Then insert the side with the male connectors in the (long) housing socket 61 13 6 925 611 and the one with the female in the short housing socket. The short cable connected to the long one that routes to pin 4 of the 12 contact connector goes into slot 3 and the one to pin 2 goes into slot 2. That`s it. Always disconnect the battery ground terminal and reconnect it only after you`re completely finished or your airbag warning light will be on and you´ll need to get the error memory deleted. |

Anyhow I just did this retro fit. I had 2011 paddles (ones with -/+) but they did not work. I had to use the regular push/pull ones but I made it + right and - left... |

I wonder why they didn`t work. Unless the paddles were not ok you must have done something wrong, maybe a bad or incorrect connection.
After all the paddles are just switches no matter what design they have. Ie you could even use the +/- keys or the up/down keys for the radio with no problem. |

Is there any way to NOT have to run wire to the shifter, or is that part mandatory? What are the parts that you are listing for - are they for connecting paddles to the MFDs and to the steering column (i.e. ... in my case I can avoid using that?) Thanks for any help

The only way I can see is if you have all the connectors after the steering column and you can activate the option by programming.
If it doesn't work, you will have to connect the column connector with the shifter wiring. |

Understood. But correct to assume that if I have paddle MFDs then I don't need to do anything in the steering and just start halfway down on the page pretty much?

Hey Guys,
I jsut bought a new M-sport, perforated leather Steering Wheel with Paddles and Multi-Function buttons. Considering that the steering wheel already came with MF controls and Paddles, the MF plug with the 6 spaces is all full. Can i take this as the contacts between the MF controlls and paddles already being in place? This would mean that all i need to do is connect the ring connectors to my gearbox "blueswitch" Is this correct? I think the above post asks the same question but just want to verify. Would just connecting the slipring wires to the bluebox give me changebility in D? or do i have to do this another way in order to get to change gears without switching in DS. Thank You in advance. |

i have come to realize something else.
My original steering wheel DID NOT have MF buttons at all. Therefore, the pins in the steering wheel switch column where the 6pins mf plug would go are not present!. I only have the airbag pins. Any solutions for this problem? Would routing the wires directly from the paddles to the shifter be possible without that plug? can i reroute the wires without theme impairign the steering wheels movement without an adequate steering wheel switch? |

Try it, normally it should not change anything.
You can verify by analyzing the WDS http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/r.../e90/index.htm |

Does anyone have a summary of which cars the paddle shifters will work in D for? I have a 2008 E93 and might consider this retrofit, but only if I can use the shifters in D.
While my car was being worked on I had a loaner 2011. I really liked they way the paddles shifted in D and then went back to full auto mode after a few seconds. |

all depends on your car....alot of folks in europe was able to shift in D
