Wow great to know. Mine has a few pixels that go dark when hot. Doesnt really bother me since I can still read most of the display. But great to know this info about the fix. Thanks BeakerBoy!

I already re-installed my head unit, so no pictures taken. So, basically the 5 screws that you remove after removing the heat sink have no slots for a screwdriver or hex for allen wrench or torx. They almost look like rivets, but I can see they have threads. Very strange.

Good instructions. Replaced a LCD that was getting muddled after 30 minutes. Bought LCD from Pixelfix based in Budapest. Excellent service, item took 4 days to arrive in the UK. Car is a 320D 2006 model.

Thanks
thanks to the OP I just replaced my display
A couple of things to add. When you remove the little circuit board on the circuit panel there is also a screw on the other side to remove Also there was clear tape on the connections that held the LCD cable to the circuit board connection. If you dont remove that clear tape you will pull all day on the cable and it wont come out of the connector. I did run into one small problem, so be prepared. One of the screws holding the heat sink was stuck pretty well. I ended up stripping the head. So I had to break out my easy out set to get the screw out. And then of course had to hunt for a metric screw to replace it. Lucky for me I had both the easy out set and a screw that fit. The detailed instructions really helped Thanks again |

I just performed the DIY and the instructions and photos were superb. Thank you and now I have a nice display again.
It took about 1.5 hrs to complete from removal of radio to re-install. |

I just replaced LCD from HU and I have a problem with backlight. Sometimes it's dark then normal, then too bright etc. There are no rules! Everything is done by DIY. Any solutions, please?

Can I replace the entire front panel assembly?
I know this is a common problem and there are a lot of threads about this. Wondering if anyone has a quick answer here.
I picked up two salvage radios with working displays and I'm wondering if I can simply replace the entire front assembly and avoid taking apart the assembly to change just the glass. The only thing I am concerned about is where is the radio's anti-theft serial number stored in the circuity. If it's in the front assembly, then I'll have a radio with no security code. If the serial number and anti-theft circuitry is on the circuit board under the CD drive, then I'm fine swapping our the whole front assembly. |

I don't think there are any anti theft codes for a BMW radio
I don't think there are any anti theft codes for a BMW radio
If you disconnect the battery it doesn't ask you for one. Besides who would use it anyway. There is programming for options contained in the radio such PDC , ipod ,usb , Sos and Hi Fi or L7 or stereo output, so you can't just swap a radio into another car if it has different options and expect them to work or not throw error codes. The following file is an example of Hi Fi with SOS and Bluetooth phone. Well. it worked! I got a second radio and swapped the whole front panel assembly. Really easy to do. A few screws and only one ribbon cable that was easy to manage. my radio call history, bluetooth connections were all still there and working, so none of that was stored in the front panel. Now i need to wait for a hot day to see how the new panel holds up.
Hardest part was getting the HVAC panel to pop out. |

Hi! I have also tried to replace the LCD but have a problem. There is a white/orange film behind the LCD that has to be reinstalled to a new screen. Unfortunatelly my plastic film was stuck to the old LCD and got ripped while trying to remove it. Does somebody know where I could get a replacement film? What replacement should I use? A simple orange plastic film or what? Maybe it's possible to repaint the old one, but what paint should I use?
Currently I put the white paper instead, LCD works fine bus the screen has a very blue tint in direct sunlight, so I believe that film behind the screen is used to remove the bluish tint. Any help would be appreciated! |
