Major sulev repair.
I had my light come on for cel on my 2007 328i sulev sedan. The code set was for secondary air system failure. This is what happened next.
1. Verified blower was working but no air coming thru exhaust. They changed the exhaust air inlet valve. It did not correct the problem. 2. It was decided that the ports inside the head where blocked so that the cylinder head had to be removed to be cleaned. 3. After repeated cleaning attempts the head could not be cleaned. 4. A new cylinder head with valve train was ordered. 5. While removing the head the radiator was broken. 6. The radiator was replaced with new hoses. 7 it was put back together then started showing codes for cylinder misfire. 8. They replaced all coils and spark plugs. 9. Oil change and coolant change. 10. Main problem was that the valve guide seals had hardened and were slightly leaking oil. Just enough to block tiny exhaust ports for the smog system. Even with the head off they are in an area that is hard to reach. So they could not be cleaned. All this under sulev warranty. Car had 125,000 miles. I am very happy with bmw. They fixed my car with no question or problems. I estimate this was around a $8,000.00 repair. |

My fuel pump crapped out last week. Had my car (2011 328i xdrive with 42,000 miles) towed to the dealer (in Portchester, NY) and informed the SA that my car was a SULEV. They replaced the fuel pump, gas tank and O2 sensor all under warranty.

Is there any way to confirm eligibility for SULEV repairs prior to taking the car in and paying for diagnostics?
Just had our indy replace the head gasket and some other parts, and the car is still stalling randomly and running rough. The sticker under our car's hood seems to indicate it is SULEV.

Hey guys,
I've been dealing with issues with my N51 as well, and I had a few clarification questions. From what I've heard, if you fix and replace an SULEV part on your own( outside of warranty) BMWNA would reimburse you the costs as per the 15yr/150k, so long as you have the receipts for everything. Is this correct? Additionally, I've been doing some searching around, and whether my radiator is covered or not is still unclear to me. Some say it is, some contest against it, but I thought that since the radiator in the N51 is unique to this engine, it would be covered as well right? Lastly, my fuel gauge is always inaccurate. I'm attributing this to the special N51 fuel tank, that has essentially almost all the N51 fueling components jam-packed into one. Since I may have a faulty fuel sensor, and replacing this sold part is not an option, would something as minute as this be covered? Thanks in advance guys. |

Hey everyone. I took my car to be covered under SULEV for the valve cover gasket and just my luck it turned out to be the VALVE COVER not the valve cover GASKET. Anyone know if this is covered as well. Cause the SA is saying its not. I gotta double check

Happy to report my CT dealer replaced all 6 ignition coils and plugs on my 2011 328xi. Started getting misfires on cylinders 1 & 3 last week and figured coils were most likely the culprit given the mileage (~75,000). I did have to remind them of SULEV coverage but didn't get any push back neither. Definitely incentivizes me to hold the car for the long term.

Took my car in to have the airbag recall done a couple of months ago, and 10 minutes later, my SA comes out and tells me that I have a bad VCG leak. I ask how much will that run and he says, nothing, it's covered under the SULEV warranty and that they'll even give me a loaner. I had to leave it there for a couple of days, because I brought it in on a Saturday and that Monday was a holiday, but I had fun with new-ish X3 loaner.

Success! Recently returned from my local dealership and with my Service light on. Home diagnostics showed it was a Cylinder 5 misfire. Got 6 new spark plugs and coils, as well as my VANOS solenoid replaced and a valve cover gasket replaced.

Does anyone know if the crankshaft position sensor is covered under SULEV warranty? I'm getting code "2A94 DME: Crankshaft sensor, signal".

Did another search, I think SULEV applies to those states where the vehicle was sold/leased/registered so you may be in luck.

SULEV journey
Hey all, want to share my SULEV experience this far at BMW Morristown in NJ.
I have a 2010 e90 328xi m-sport (original owner) Currently with 80,300 miles on the clock. At about 79k started experiencing intermittent rough idle, cranks without turning over after fuel fill ups, and SES light. Went on the forums and decided to tackle the fuel pump and filter, but then read that it's not possible with my car being a SULEV. Brought the car in to the dealer last week and told them the story. They charged me the $158 diagnostic fee and called me back saying a $316 reprogramming was necessary. Already sensing the impending "lets do this first, and then talk about the next repair" I wasn't happy but agreed to the reprogramming. Got a call back a few days later saying with a list of repairs needed. -Cracked valve cover creating a "massive" air leak $1510 -front O2 sensors -$1120 -fuel tank vent valve - $934 Plus a list of "previously deferred" tasks which I already took care of myself including ofhg, drive belts, tensioner, power steering flush etc Was told by BMW NA rep that my car only had a 7yr/70k sulev warranty and nothing is covered. Went to the dealership over the weekend saying thank you and that I would need my car back as another dealer agreed to take care of everything under warranty.. the service manager told me she's not sure the care is safe to drive off the lot and that she would check with the techs by Monday. Got a call this am saying o2 sensors and fuel tank vent valves are covered and they'll get started on those. I already ordered a valve cover so will do that one once I get the car back. Anyways just wanted to share the process thus far as I'm sure many others are starting to deal with Sulev issues and there's lots of stories of people being covered or getting denied but very little record of the exact interactions with the dealers in getting this covered. |
