NFS here is my 2penuth.

in almost all occasions swapping cars will cost money. They are not investments they are expensive toys to be enjoyed and savored.

If you change into a 335d you can expect miles more oomph and remapped its glorious. It is more econmical and is a pleasure to own after all my high rev lunacy of the past.

Sometimes i miss the revs and engine noise but in the most im satisfied........would you be????? if the answer is no the dont buy a diesel.

Having driven the 335i for 1000miles on loan i can say that its a lovely car its faster than a 330i but essentially feels the same to drive ( apart from the extra 20% performance gain) so i dont think itd make you FEEL that much different

if i where you id run the 330i for the 3years and save up a nice big deposit and buy either a) M3 (mainstream attention) or the ALPINA B3 (leftfield chioce) in any of its guises.

the reason i say that is that these 2 cars would deffinatley feel a 'step up' for you.

I've wanted an e46 m3 for the last 10 years.

Now that I can actually afford a used one (maybe 1-2 year old) I can't see the point in buying one, because the e90 is simply a more advanced and modern car.

I'd like nothing more than to buy that e46 m3 right now, but I know that it won't be much better (and in some ways it will be worse) than a new 335i.

Trouble with the new M3 is that it's more expensive - I could probably stretch to a new one, but I'd feel awful spending that much money on a car, when I could be spending it on my family.

Damn you BMW for changing the M3 right when I was finally ready to buy one.

The e46 has been around since 1998. I used to drive a very nice 'v' registered e46 323ci.

As you say the M3 was launched in the UK in 2001. So I've wanted one for 6 years - but it feels like 10

Like you, I get bored of cars very quickly, and I never opted into our company car scheme as we have to keep them for 4 years

The unfortunate cycle for me is:

1) Research cars, getting a bit anal about it if I'm honest, with spreadsheets and comparisons and reading owner reviews, forums etc. This can go on for months - and in fact the longer the better as far as I'm concerned as I'm not actually spending any money!

2) Shortlist and drive. By the time I start going to dealers the writing is on the wall really, within a couple of months I'll have ordered something or seen a used one I simply must have.

3) Order something

4) Wait for it to arrive/be prepared, which is an agonising wait (albeit exciting).

5) Pickup day - this is the peak

6) Feel really euphoric for about two weeks after getting the car.

7) Lose interest (in relative terms) in cars for 6 months or so.

8) Start getting bored, but try not to think about it for as long as possible.

9) Go to 1)

Annoying when I look at it objectively, and think what I could've owned if I'd just keep cars for 3-4 years instead of 18-24 months. On this basis you should keep the 330i and start putting money away for a bit, then use what you've gathered to either buy a second 'toy' car or upgrade to an E92/E93 335i.

NFS, i'm with you on this....I wanted an E460 M3 since as llong as I can remember. When I bought my 325 convertinble I was about 6/7k short of a decent fairly new used one but couldn't bring myself to do it. Then a year or so later I wished I had. Wait til new M3 is depreciated enough not to impact your family then get one used?!

Bloody hell! That is totally uncanny....I thought it was just me but that is my 'car buying' cycle too

I tell you what I blame, the t'internet.... it is the root of evil and money wasting

I am relying on you blokes to break me out of the cycle by not letting me trade my 335d for at least two years

Maybe, but at this stage I'm not sure if I will feel the same about the V8 one.

Plus I think that they will hold significant value for at least the next 3-4 years because BMW are limiting supply and they will be a rare used car.

Every so often I think - maybe I should just by an e46 M3 and get it out of my system, but then the little sensible voice in my head points out that it will cost me a whole of of money and hassle, for a performance improvement that I will never really be able to exploit on the road.

Then I realise that what I really really want is a Lotus Exige, which is of course a completely stupid idea.

I could always get an Astra VXR for £20K and a Lotus Elise for £10K

This would be a key point for me. It would be fairly exclusive for a few years. It definitely will hold its value for a few years... it would almost be like an investment

I think it looks stunning in Imola Red, and since it comes fully kitted, you wouldn't need to add any (many) options.

Astra VXR is pants, at least that is what Mr JC said on Top Gear, and it doesnt come close to the ST, Type R and Leon FR. That said none of the aforementioned vehicles comes close to any BMW, let alone your 330i.

Dont know about the Elise though. My brother has a mint 53 reg Elise S4(?) in BRG. I have been in it, great for high days and holidays and track days, but everyday transport, forget it!

Have you thought about chopping your E91 330i for an E92 330i ?? Now that is a step forward
