I bought my 2010 335i on Dec 30th (build date 10/2009) and now I'm starting to wonder if or when this is going to happen to mine. It has 650 miles and so far it's been running fine. Now every time I take it out for a spin, this problem is going to be in the back of my mind. JT

For what I have read so far, not scientific/proven fact, the folks in CA have the most failed HPFP. It does not mean folks in other states don't have HPFP issue. For me I guess I was lucky. 1/2 engine light was on (no reduced speed), long crank randomly in the morning. I took her to the dealer couple days later and got her back after few hours. |

Yeah. I've heard of at least one case of an owner in the Miami area who had his replaced, although his is a 2009. Anyway, I'm going to try and not think about it too much and enjoy driving this ultimate driving machine, but at the same time, knock on wood, hang a rabbit's foot on the rear view mirror, and hope for the best.

Why the rabbit's foot? It wasn't lucky for the rabbit.

I want to thank everyone who posted on this thread. Your comments and experiences were very helpful in figuring out my problem -- and in how to handle this problem at the dealership.

Well, I had my First HPFP failure at 4000 miles. And now long cranks again at 6000 miles... SUCH BS!
I'll be taking it in as soon as the CEL comes on, which I'm sure will be any day now... I can't believe BMW hasn't addressed this issue better... |

I wouldn't wait until it fails again -- our service advisor told us if we ever experienced long cranking time bring it in right away, to save the inconvenience of the inevitable tow when it fails solid.
Hasn't happened yes...knock on wood... |

Thought I'd add my symptoms as another set of reference data:
Starting about a month before the pump was replaced, my cranks started to get longer, approximately 3-5 seconds. Not necessarily when it was cold, kind of just random during the day. Then about 10 days before I went to the dealership, I had an SES light on while driving for two days. Then it went out. About three days later it came on again for two days, then went out. On the day I took it to the dealership, no light, but still longer, random cranks. The dealer could not originally duplicate the light, but there were codes for the HPFP. Then as luck would have it, my SA and the tech were taking the car for a test drive and the SES light came on again. The pressure was fine, but there were codes for engine software. They updated that, and since then I have not have a problem. Pump was replaced at 4,000 miles and 5 months of ownership. |

Since I have a 2009 335 and it is NOT covered by any extended warranty on the HPFP, I went to the service advisor at the local BMW dealer and questioned him specifically if they have repaired any 2009 or 2010 models with HPFP failures. He claimed that they had only seen 2007 and 2008 cars with bad pumps and none of the newer cars. That is just one dealership, and I don't even know if he was being honest or not, but he would have no reason to not be honest at this point. (Unless BMW NA has sent out a message to SAs ordering them to conceal the problem on the newer cars).
If the people at BMW NA had the moral integrity to openly disclose the extent of this problem, that would at least satisfy some owners that the company is making its' best efforts. The refusal to disclose the full extent of the problem is not very reassuring, and will drive away some loyal customers. Without doubt they are tracking statistics on these pump failures. I am challenging BMW to make all the information public - failure rates year by year, patterns noted in different parts of the country or any other theory about why these failures occur, all of what is being done to correct the defect, and assurance to all N54 owners that they will be taken care of on what is obviously an engineering failure. Unfortunately, based on past behavior, that degree of disclosure and honesty is unlikely to be forthcoming from this company. They will lose customers over this. |

I just had mine replaced on my 2010 335xi. 2 months of ownership, 2.5k miles.....maybe a lemon here.
heres a question for anyone: how come it seems, if you get it once, it'll probably happen again..... where as some people never get the issue? If its the same part in each of the casr, is it the rest the engine that beats it up? or the driver? it just is not adding up to me. i read about a car having it 2-4 times replaced where other have none...however its the same part in the 2 polar opposite cars! how does one fail several times in one car and not in the other?

I am glad the posts helped you, but having read the information you have also likely concluded that the problems of reliability are outside of the bailiwick of dealerships - they mostly only provide band aids.

If you know it, would you post part number of the original pump, and the part number of the replacement pump with mileage and date at replacement?

Thanks for the post. Yes, -881 is the pump which may still be current. The most recent pump is the one where the part number ends in -943. The -943 has just become available from Tischer (see BimmerPost Jan 19, 2010)

4th HPFP
07' 335i....on it's 4th HPFP as of yesterday.....2nd one in 60 days.
Supposedly I received the "new" part manufactured by the new vendor for BMW in December.....still no good. I opened a case with BMW yesterday and asked them to buy the car back. I am the 2nd owner (CPO), first owner had it replaced under a recall notice 1 time - I assumed that fixed the problem....I had not read all the posts. The representative made it sound like it would be no problem since it has been in the shop for 45 of the last 60 days. When I took it in yesterday after going into Limp mode on a rainy slicked freeway, they advised it was a bad injector in cylinder #6 (I was having long cranks for about 4 days). I had to argue the point to test the HPFP regardless of no fault code. They were reluctant but did it...3 hours later they replaced the HPFP as well. |
