I ran the 2-piece PE which include the muffler and resonator along with the AA headers for few months and found it too loud. The stock muffler and resonator along with AA headers is the best compromise IMO. |

This is awesome! Just a few more tries and you can get into the 13s I'm sure.
I used to go to the drag strip on my motorbike and it took me a good 3-4 trips before I could start getting my best times. I remember my first time down the strip I let off the throttle way too early and just coasted over the line! I think I ran like 13sec @ 50mph or something. Your 14sec time gives me confidence in my own 328i. Maybe I'll do a few of the same mods as you have.

Good job Big.. those look like great numbers for your first time at the drag strip.
People really don't understand what it's like until they try it. It is definitely a heart-racing experience, which makes a good RT and launch WAY harder than one might think. It's not like launching out of a cul-de-sac of a newly developed, uninhabited neighborhood... where you can sit there and play with throttle all day until you're ready. One tip for a good time though, if all you care about is measuring the car and not your ability (RT, at least), is don't worry about your RT at all, or the car next to you, and take your time on the launch. Now I'm not saying sit there for 10 seconds.. but give yourself a second or two after the other car goes if you'd like. No one minds unless you get ridiculous about it. The RT does not play into your ET for test and tune purposes.. in other words the clock doesn't start until you cross the starting line. So let the other guy launch, take a deep breath, rev it up and go!

Eh, I'm not sure I would do any of those (save the wheels) all over again. The AFE is nice, but I think you can get similar gains with a modified stock airbox. The Exhaust is an absolute no though.

I really wish a Euro N52/53 exhaust manifold could be Dyno'd against a AFE catted header. |

Going from memory of my research K&N Drop In for the stock airbox flows like 530cfm. The filter on the AFE flows over 800cfm. And the E46M3 (330hp) K&N Drop In flows like 450cfm. And the 335i (330hp) K&N Drop In flows over 800cfm. So based on comparing the air needs of the e46m3 which makes more N/A power than our cars ever will it seems we are good. But then looking at the F/I 335 based on its filter surface area we see BMW felt the airflow needs are much higher for that car. My thoughts are... with MILV’s, Big Bore TB, Headers, and Higher Redline I’m really looking to get more air easily accessible to the motor. The stock assembly probably flows plenty of air with a nice safety margin for most set ups. But with the mods I’ve done those last 500rpms (7000-7500) are where I’m looking to make a little more power... and airflow limitations will most strongly affect those rpms... and I felt at his point with all I’ve done it’s worth a shot. I will be testing the AFE box to see if it helps. Last edited by Biginboca; 03-07-2018 at 04:07 AM.. |

Did you get-
aFe POWER 54-81012-B Magnum FORCE Stage-2 Si Pro 5R Cold Air Intake System They claim +56% flow, +12hp, +16tq I have one and it is a very nice piece. Just follow the instructions and use their hardware and screws. It sounds great, seems to have more power than aFe panel/charcoal delete/rev elbow. I am not sure about the 2 small vents in the front. I think that at speed the 'ram' effect from the front intake with scoops is 'blowing' air out the aFe front vents and loosing air box pressure. At low speeds the 2 air vents probably help. Or at least that's a current theory. I am going to block the 2 small front vents and see what that does. |

On another note GPS timing device “Dragy” arrived yesterday and I began playing with it this morning. I’m loving it and believe anyone on this board who is serious about speed mods (@TheAxiom lol) needs to get one of these! I did some data acquisition with it and then overlayed my RPMs in each gear with its data and it’s going to function like a virtual dyno. Like I can do a pull, swap airboxes and then do another pull and get real data. Also can finally settle the shift point debate. Do a pull from 30-70 and shift at 7000. Then do another pull and shift at 7400 and compare. What a killer device for anyone looking to go faster! This morning I did some baseline work. Recorded this pull: The device is not generous like the ap I was using. It is really legit and repeatable. My 60’ time was .2 seconds slower than my track run and the time above was .2 seconds longer. Conditions were very similar so I expect that. Also I’ve seen a lot of timeslips posted where people ran the Dragy at the track and were within .03 seconds on all the standard the markers. So here’s some data I recorded on 3 back to back 60-90 3rd gear pulls and then using a video of my tachometer overlaid engine rpms into the data. Virtual dyno for the Everyman testing mods right here: 60-90 Total Time 3rd Gear WOT (which is ~5000rpms to 7400rpms) 1st Run 5.36” 2nd Run 5.38” 3rd Run 5.39” Breakdowns of the Runs: 60-70 (~5000rpms to 5750rpms) 1st Run 1.51” 2nd Run 1.54” 3rd Run 1.53” 70-80 (~5750 to 6500rpms) 1st Run 1.67” 2nd Run 1.66” 3rd Run 1.70” 80-90 (~6500-7400rpms) 1st Run 2.17” 2nd Run 2.18” 3rd Run 2.16” You can set custom parameters. Like I set those 4 parameters above to time from 60-90 and the 10mph increments because I’m going to be using it like a dyno to test some mods in those rev ranges. But those 10mph increments for example could be set to 3mph or 1mph increments of you want greater resolution. So you can take all those (30 x 1mph increments per se) data points and make a virtual "dyno graph" of them to compare to another of a mod or shift points or diff ratios, etc. I can’t even describe how valuable this info will be for the driveway modder. Can test intake Scoops at various speeds, shift points, launch rpms, intakes, exhausts, etc, etc. In some ways this may actually be better than a dyno because it will allow you to improve the car...but also the driving as well. Chiming in here -
Ran a 15.0 at 93mph in my 1 with only the 3.73 diff at Bradenton Speedway. Hot day and my first time on the track so the launch was non existent. |

I did the same MPH, but higher ET when I was stock at the same track. Go there often? Isn't Orlando Speedway closer?

Did some testing yesterday and found best shift points for me. 1st gear shift 7000 because soft limiter starts pulling power after that. Then run it to 7400 every shift after. Basically as high as you can get before it pulls power.
Also working on my shifting and launches and getting better. So it was 57 degrees this morning on way to work and my gas light had just come on. Almost ideal conditions lol I still say there's a little more in it I don’t feel this was the best launch I've had but very close. Still could see a 13.8-13.85 with best launch. I think I would need to ride the clutch a bit to get the absolute best time. What I've been doing is like what I did at the track last Friday, doing more like a clutch drop at 2k. Also I accidentally did a little burn out right before this launch seemed to help also. (I aborted a run that spun all through first and then just started over immediately). So even though I’m on street tires and everyone says not to do a burnout I've actually had my 2 best times after mild burnouts. Also something interesting about Dragy is you can choose to post times to a leader board and see how your car ranks against others same brand. And then you can click on users to see their mods, should they choose to share them which most everyone does. So looking at what others have posted to the BMW 0-60 leader board my car is running with the turbo cars. The M235 is the only car listed as stock. None of the other cars are stock and #56 2011 535 is extensively modded and the #55 335i is lightly modded and I pulled ahead of them on the 0-60. I’m really psyched to see a N/A N52 car keeping up with some F/I cars! Last edited by Biginboca; 03-08-2018 at 04:56 AM.. |

Not an ap really, it’s a GPS timer that pairs with your phone:
