The only thing it does it while stopped it helps to bring in cooler air as the intake is not right next to the radiator. That is it.

I see the argument here, but if i'm going to be pulling in as much air as possible, wouldn't you rather it didn't have to pass through the hot engine bay that's acting as a heating element before it hits my intake filter?

Why not spend a few bucks and use the factory provided plenum?

The conversation moved to the scoops you can add to the front of the factory snorkel, we aren't talking about the cover any more.

tl;dr: Cover your intake filter and use the stock plenum. Intake scoops don't do shit.

I think there was only one stock clip that couldn't go on, but it's still way better than nothing.

Amazing how the "hardcore tuners" in n5x enthusiasts Facebook group will rip you apart for trying to explain that sucking in hot engine bay air is bad. Having an intercooler doesn't mean there isnt a benefit to keeping pre-turbo intake temps as low as possible. Appreciate the data for sure! You get better results charging cooler denser air than you do charging even a few degree warmer engine bay air with open element filters. Its a pretty damn simple concept people don't seem to understand...

"but bms released data showing gains" yeah no shit and they'd be even higher if the filters were sealed away from engine bay heat... the filter is the restriction not the box.

No, the box is 100% the restriction. There was an entire thread with flow testing done.

Sorry I meant more the concept of sealing the intake... A box doesn't necessarily have to present a restriction if it's size properly. A sealed intake is all benefits if sized properly.

Also, this is N55 related and I've seen plenty of other people say that removing the cover of the stock box resulted in 0 gains, which means both box and filter were bypassed. So that is completely contradicting to what you say. Can you link to what you refer to? I'd like to read and learn. Conical style filters naturally flow better than a flat panel filter as well. This is proven without a doubt.

There is also the factor of dyno pulls can easily vary 20+whp from pull to pull lol... Also, in real life air pressure feeds a sealed intake from an area of high pressure at the front fascia... The air pressure cannot be duplicated on a dyno. It would make sense that in a controlled environment like a dyno, with limited to no airflow, a stock box would present more of a restriction. Not a single test I've seen has ever even considered this.

I've always thought about that ^^ , good information. From reading this thread tho i think ill just stick with my stock box setup, My BMS one had fitment issues anyway, doesnt seem to be worth the trouble
