Just wanted to post my own 2 cents with diffs online, horrible customer service, went back and forth with the owner Dan to try to send me an invoice for a LSD on my 435i xdrive for over 3 months with little to no answers or responses, even had his personal cell phone number and would never answer my calls or text messages and finally gave up on him. Looking online a less known but in my opinion more knowledgeable diff builder for our cars Performance Gearing, the owner Jim built me a clutch based LSD similar to the M performance variant but slightly more aggressive while still being street friendly in less than 2 weeks and to my doorstep. Customer service was top notch and always answered, and responded to all my questions, and would recommend everyone to give him a try over diffs online

Let us know how how you like it! Did you opt for REM polishing?

I did the same cause I didn't want to have to break it in haha.

They told me that it would not negate the break in tho. I’d still be careful on the first 1000 mile with my 4 grand investment. Also bought oem diff fluid for the 1000 mile break in oil change already.

I was never told about a break-in.... woops lol. I also have a Quaife. Funny enough, diffsonline has a blog post about how REM can be used to negate break-in. Did your shop or diffsonline tell you to break it in?

I called diffsonline a few times and they just told me it still requires break in. I’ll just be careful on the first 1000 miles, they have conflicting information sometimes.

They do. I did the REM polishing polishing in hopes of no break in. I even asked the shop about it and the said just take it easy for a little and then I can have fun. I drained the fluid at like 900 miles and there wasn't any metal in it.

They also suggested that I use redline fluid, which on Wavetrac's website they have specifically said to never use redline fluid since they all contain LSD friction modifiers. I have bought Liqui Moly open diff 75w90 fluid from FCP Euro for the initial fill.

Yeah its rather odd. I have redline in mine. I've had my diff for 2 years now and haven't had any issues. On my way home when I got it I was doing highway driving at about 80mph and didn't have issues.

Driving on the highway or in a straight-line it really shouldn't be an issue. It is when our gear type ATB is engaged during hard cornering. The redline friction modifier stuff messes with the internal helical gears' operations. I read on quaife's website that they recommend OEM fill as well.

I think quaife’s design should be fine with redline fluid. But Wavetrac has not only the wave hub but also the carbon fiber friction discs, which I think the reason why they strongly suggest against redline fluid. I personally really like redline fluid, just kinda sucks they don’t specifically make a diff fluid without the lsd additives. Also, BMW oem fluid costs sooo much. I think I’m actually gonna take advantage of FCP euro’s lifetime replacement for this one.

So the reason, he uses the Redline fluid is because he has noticed that without the friction modifiers in the less viscous fluid, you tend to get some gear-on-gear contact. He likes the slickness of the 75w110 to prevent gear wear. This was found out through extensive testing.

He said all helical gear type diffs. He said that in testing, the friction modifiers hardly affect diff performance. Our open diffs use GL-4 liquid, GL-5 has friction modifiers that make things super slick. I'll take his word as he's been doing this a long time and I knew there was a reason he was recommending redline.

Your new Wavetrac® differential is incredibly durable and will withstand the harshest environments...as long as suitable oil is used. Many customers ask what oil we recommend for use with the Wavetrac® differential. We feel the best answer is: Use the "factory fill." In other words, use the gear oil spec that your car manufacturer recommends for your car. The Wavetrac® is compatible with virtually all factory-installed gear oils used today. If you are racing your vehicle, and wish to upgrade the gear oil to improve performance or durability in racing conditions, choose the oil carefully: be aware that some gear oils have additives that are not recommended for use with your Wavetrac®. Some have friction modifiers designed for limited slip differentials. These modifiers generally increase slipperiness and are intended to reduce clutch disc chatter in conventional clutch-type LSDs. Some gear oils such as Red Line Oil's Shockproof® type have microscopic solid particles in immersion in order to "cushion" transmission components, acting as an extreme pressure agent. The Wavetrac® and all helical gear differentials in general, operate using friction. The friction generated between its internal gears and its housing are what allow this type of differential to function. Gear oil additives that drastically reduce friction will actually reduce the performance of gear differentials. The internals of the diff get too slick to generate adequate friction - reducing the differential's effectiveness - reducing its ability to drive both wheels. In conclusion, when using a Wavetrac®: Use factory spec oils for your car Use Motul Synthetic high performance oils if you wish to upgrade the oil. Please consult Autotech Driveline for recommendations. Avoid gear oils with limited slip additives. Do NOT use RedLine, Shockproof® or similar gear oils. Performance Gear Oils we recommend: Requirement Oil 75W90 Motul Gear 300 (100118 1l) 75W140 Motul Gear Competition (101161 1l) Motul Gear Oil is available from Wavetrac dealers Please note that you will void the Wavetrac® Limited Lifetime Warranty if incorrect gear oil is used. |
