Sure, if if you are looking for a chick magnet. If you are looking for driving dynamics (they ride and handle like a Buick, and it's interesting to note that RR used an old Buick V8 for years), fuel economy, decent reliability and good resale -- keep looking. The only good things about RR are the looks and off-road ability. Period. At or near the bottom of every reliability report that I have ever seen.

Anyone have some links to some reports showing the poor reliability?

For the money, I would go with a Cayenne GTS instead of a Range Rover HSE or RR Sport.
The Cayenne GTS is better built and much faster. Not to mention better looking. |

I recommend test driving a lot of different SUV's in that class. Buy the one that makes you think, "holy !@#$, this thing rocks!"

I updated my picture to include Porsche.
Its definitely more expensive. I'd like to get a 2006 Turbo, but its a lot more closer to 70K than it is to 60. Do you think a similar list could be found for the 3 series? What about the Cayenne?

2006 Turbo? I think that's still over 100. Wasn't 2006 the first year of the 997? If it was teh last 996 then maybe they are that cheap.

Little input for someone who has both!
Have a '03 RR (the good one with a BMW built motor). It has been very reliable and a great vehicle for what it is intended for. I do off road it and it is more capable in the woods then any previous 4x4 I have owned. Don't think you are worried about the off road abilities of the RR though as I have never seen another new RR on the trails in Moab with me! Most are city vehicles. It hauls a ton of stuff, is very comfortable ride and a great "Truck". Just got a E91 for my wife and it's a great car. This is our 17th BMW (have 5 currently) and BMW does continue to make them better. If you are just looking for more room, consider a BMW wagon as you get great handling and a ton of room. Our E91 hauls 4 adults in the same comfort as our RR and gets about twice the gas milage doing it. When used for fun like skiing or biking, we throw the toys on the roof of the BMW instead of inside the RR. Bottom line, yes, you will miss your BMW as the RR is not as much fun to drive on a daily basis. You will no longer get excited when you see an empty off ramp in front of you to have a little fun with. You will be very happy with a RR as they make damn nice vehicles these days. Would recommend finding a clean, low milage '03-'05 with the BMW mechanicals as they are the most reliable vehicles ever to have a Rover badge on them. Be prepared for the pain at the gas pump (cost me $100 to fill mine this morning). Would strongly suggest you test drive a 3 or 5 series wagon as well as Audi's offerings before putting down your hard earned cash as you may find it covers all your needs. I have a very nice 540 wagon for sale (wife's previous car) that will shock you on both the performance side (thanks to Dinan) and load hauling capability! Good luck with the decision and PM me if you want any specifics on things Rover-ish! |
