After having been in the minus 20s for the last few days I finally got a chance to lift the hood and see where it actually makes sense to place vents. The 3" vent area adjacent to the windshield proposed won't work as that area is not directly open to the engine. I'll try a hand at Adobe Photo Elements later tonight.

Ok, is this more along the lines? smaller side vents, lower center vent...

To give everyone perspective on where the vents are with respect to engine inerds I've posted a sample of where I measured placement of the vents. Its now a question of how much larger to make the vents and general angles. Do the vents need to be larger on the sides or need to get extended towards the front more ... Your feedback is valued.
Something I have noticed with the winter driving is that the area immediately over the radiator is the warmest on the whole car as it melts the snow and dries the quickest. Makes me wonder if it is worth considering placing a vent there. This really needs to be done with CAD, so if anyone knows of a decent trialware CAD app I'm game to learn it.

This is much nicer and answers my thoughts about a vent over the radiator. Nice one!

why not just use the original design? it thus far looks the best. just adjust the curves a bit so it matches the e92 and it perfect. i plan on getting the closed vents so...

No its perfect! The front center vent is the only one that needs to be there really. All the heat from the radiator is concentrated in that area as someone else has again mentioned with the snow example (I used rain, wet hood). The other two are really not needed but do look pretty cool.

Front center vent is a must. Heat gets up easily from the front because it is a low pressure area. Moreover it is the same spot where is the most of the heat. Mitsu Evo vent is not in the front center by chance. It has also a perfect design.

Something like this vent up at the front over the radiator to draw the heat out. I'd bet this would actually make the radiator more efficient. ![]()

I agree with bullmrkt. Now that it is a little more human outside, I've been able to run a few more tests. After running the car medium hard for 50 minutes (ambient outside temp 2C) the front center spot, just over the radiator, ran 20C (36F) warmer than the side vents depicted in either of the two designs. I'm voting for the design with the front center vent.

Although vent in the very front on the top of the radiator would be great, I think we could compromise it being slightly further back as far as it is not too far behind the radiator. I would like to see if we are going to see intakes with cone filters in the engine bay in the near future. If they perform well, I would definitely need to have a hood sucking the hot air out. |

I would make those vents smaller on the side and add a center vent. Maybe get rid of the vents that are on the inside of the crease and add a center vent.
Also remember, these vents are designed to release heat...not suck in cold air. You will see on hot or cold days that heat will be radiating from the hood. |
