The first number is pretty irrelevant to someone in warm weather.

VISCOSITY

Most oils on the shelves today are "Multigrades", which simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades (i.e. 10w-40 etc)

Multigrades were first developed some 50 years ago to avoid the old routine of using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer.

In a 10w-40 for example the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the "W" number the better the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance.

The 40 in a 10w-40 simply means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C. This is a fixed limit and all oils that end in 40 must achieve these limits. Once again the lower the number, the thinner the oil: a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100°C etc. Your handbook will specify whether a 30, 40 or 50 etc is required.

http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm

I run 5W-30 Red Line in all my cars. Only other oils I like are Amsoil and Motul. Just personal preference though. I don't like Mobil 1 simply for that fact that I found it to sheer the most.

Castrol Euro formula was another good one if you could find it.
Great info, thanks man!

And ya know what's kind of odd, is right when I changed my oil to Mobil 1 0w-40 after I was only smoking a tiny bit, my car started pluming smoke.. I thought it may have been the 0w-40 that attributed to the newly increased amount of smoke, but a few people said that's highly unlikely so idk if it did in fact play a role or not.. I heard 5w-30 is the OEM oil so I'll run that when i get this all put back together..

Thanks again!

Actually I had the turbo exhaust housings sandblasted this past weekend because they were god awfully dirty and oil stained.. Should be done tomorrow, and then I need to stop by BMW and grab the o-rings, gaskets, etc and this weekend will start reassembly.. I started on the oil pan as well this past weekend because that was leaking, so I'll put that on with the new gasket first thing Saturday morning and get back to putting new turbos on and giving it a go..! This is such a tedious process, and it's really not "hard" per se, but some of the maneuvers I've had to manipulate my hands into to get some of these bolts off, are positions I didn't know hands could even be put into lol..

Here's a video I took this past weekend of just how caked up that rear turbo drain was..

Holy of holies, congratulations!!! So it wasn't the valve seals that were the culprit after all!

Thank you, I appreciate it..! It took me a few months to get it back up and running, but full time work and school kind of have me strapped to only a few hours each weekend.. But I'm back up and running, plus some new shiny 3" downpipes, and did all my coding yesterday to get me back up to date lol, I'm a happy camper..!

BeastMode335i My turbo's (OEM and replaced 7k miles ago) are emitting a smoke as well out of my fully catless exhaust.
The were replaced because when I went fully catless I got smoke out of my car. And BMW covered them under the warranty.

I'm beginning to think it's not my turbo's however.

My question to you: Did your car smoke the way mine is smoking now?
Upon cold start, no smoke. After warm up. No smoke. Start car and it's already warm, no smoke. HOWEVER, if car is warm and I let it sit and idle for over 5 minutes I get smoke. No matter the temp outside.
If I am applying throttle there is no smoke. If I am driving forward there is no smoke. If I stop at a red light for 2-3 minutes, no smoke. Only smokes when idling for 4+ minutes after engine is warm.

Sounds like a turbo issue for sure, but have you first checked your valve cover and PCV system..?? Mine smoked from the very second I started it, until the second I turned it off, but my rear turbo drain was completely solidified shut with caked up oil and carbon.. I'd start with the more simple stuff first and go from there, but if BMW covered them initially I may even ponder bringing it back to them and having them recheck their work..

Get'r done! It's really not that bad, just very time consuming and very veryyyyyy tight work space.. I don't even have big hands and getting to some of the bolts and shit is what makes it such a p.i.t.a. however I still wouldn't ever pay someone to work on my car.. Diagnose it yeah, but doing maintenance, fa'getta'bout'it...!

This sounds like the valve stem seals issue, going by the same smoke culprit after extended idle experienced on the N62 v8 engines on x5, 5 and 6 series.
