Thank you for the extra pictures. I noticed the little "stirrup" in 1st and 2nd photo [of post #42] for the snorkel to be held in :-]
I'm thinking I will go plain stainless as I'm pondering insulation on the outside. Something with low emittance reflective foil on it. Not sure if it would be good to put the insulation on the inside as the fibers would be likely sucked out and onto filter. Perhaps it would work if I sealed the blanket edges real good. I'm not even sure if insulation is needed for that matter. I just think of SS and think it will sink up heat as compared to plastic (poor heat conductor). Will the cylindrical filter (and any adapter) come in the kit? |

Will air intake temps be measured with those? I found with the open filter the temps rose to well above 130*F under idle in traffic and such, and dropped down very slow compared to the stock intake which barely increased temps under the same conditions.

Where were you getting your air? My design blocks the engine compartment out and the air is drawn through the snorkel and right corner of the car

If your design blocks out enough heat like the stock airbox does then it'll be a pretty good piece to have.

Looks like a solid design.

I'm trying....unfortunately due to other projects and time constraints this one went on the back burner. But I'm back on it so we'll have them ready soon! Going to send one Bob's way as soon as I have it available.

What IAT's are folks measuring?
With car fully warmed up (coolant at 175-180 deg) A idle - IAT 20 - 40 deg above ambient temp At 30mph sustained cruise control - IAT 6-11 deg above ambient temp At 70mph sustained cruise control - IAT 2-6 deg above ambient temp Stock inter-cooler with only one (as of now) home made scoop installed inside upper left grill feeding air up into stock box snorkel. (maybe puertorican wasn't crazy after all jajajaja) |

At ~57 and ~72 mph the IAT's at the MAF were at ambient... without scoops. ;-) http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...9&postcount=15 Looking good iaknown. Glad to see you developing neat stuff for the community.

Your Ambient vs IAT log demonstrates my ultimate goal but with a stock IC. iaknown, not trying to hijack your thread; instead sharing my observations on potential areas of improvement (by insulating/ventilating or both) to reduce final IAT's (intake temp). |

But the best bet really comes down to replacing the stock intercooler with a high-end one (not a cheap Chinese core. The temperature drop from a good intercooler is pretty crazy, as can be seen on many of the gas car's logs..... |

Careful wth use of the IR thermometer. Shiny (low infrared emittance) surfaces will give a lower reading than they really are. The black rubber is fine. Cast aluminum is also fine. Machined and shiny aluminum is where you will get a bad reading. Put tape on those shiny surfaces for a good reading.
