My oldest is 32, study THIS time to be a nurse, back at home in his original room until then. He's a good kid, takes a LOAD of shit from his mom.
Middle one is turning 30. Just bought a house in Portland, almost done with his apprentice with IBEW, bought the house with a woman his mom approves to be part of the family SOME DAY. Youngest is a junior is HS, just asked me to help him remember to sign up for SAT testing early. Team Captain of JV baseball team, catcher. Putting together the Beetle for his car. Gave him the same deal my dad gave me: get a free ride to college, graduate, and I buy you any production car you want upon graduation - you pay for insurance. This is the only one of my loin. |

Glad that you are helping him get back on his feet while he is doing a career change.

Not quite so noble as a career change, really. He was a warehouse guy (I think) until he went thru the Police Academy. Then he met a girl who was in nursing school and then he started. Now he spends a lot of time studying with his latest girlfriend, who also is in the nursing program. I think he has Pilipino Phever!!!

What do you mean that far away? He never even got any closer.... actually, you almost certainly meant how'd he get that close. Either way, I grant you 6 joke points and admit you into the club.

My only choice for them has ALWAYS been whatever path they choose to tread. I'm just kinda the bumpers along the edge to help them stand back up if they fall down. They seem to know, if not always appreciate that. Some of the stories they relate, highlighting the difference in response between myself and the wife, seem to shine me in a better light than I remember at the time.

I was going to jokingly say "yes", thinking like, you know... dumb shit - eating halloween candy or something... then, I detected an extraordinarily sinister undertone to your question. So, I am going to stick with... no. No I don't.

The most frightening thing I probably have done to my kids is be as brutally honest as I thought their little minds could handle. The world be a fucked up place and I don't want them unprepared. I was sure as hell not perfect and there are a ton of things I'd take back. However, I am confident that when I am ever held to answer for myself, I will be able to honestly say that everything I did was out of love and an honest belief it was for their best interest. That's really about all you can do. And, when you do feel like you made a mistake, make yourself smarter to minimize future mistakes. I wonder if being perfect would be awesome, or boring...

I might have whispered "cucuye" (no idea how to really spell that, but it translate roughly as monster in Spanish) one or 25 times too many. I can still see a certain expansion of the pupils when I say it now

It's amazing how much kids know about tech stuff these days--my 6-year old may not be the best at writing numbers and letters but he knows how to do almost everything on the ipad. He almost cracked the password for buying apps on the app store...had to secretly change that. I've always been into tech and computers since I was a kid, but everything is so tech driven that the kids are into it much younger. I've seen kindergartners with cell phones. He's very adept at many games-- he can build some pretty sweet houses on Minecraft and loves cars. Anytime a bmw drives by he asks, "is it fast?" And my usual answer is, " a little bit." He's still planning on getting a lambo when he grows up.
