Inxguy and sleeper, I'm not taking sides here. I will throw out the adage that "you pays your money and take your chances". At the end of the day, we make our own choices. The oil analyses submitted by many members show a 10 to 12k interval is alright from a chemistry perspective. Inxguy stated we are pissing our money away if we are doing early changes. I'd like to say that many Americans piss money away in a variety of ways (Starbucks, pedicures, lawn service, maid service, etc). I don't do any of those things and mow my own grass still as well as do my own oil changes. I do change the oil earlier than many of you here and I like to keep my engine as clean inside as possible. I don't drive my D a whole lot so my changes are only every 7 months. So on a dollars basis, I'm likely spending no more money than anyone else here. I buy the OEM oil filters from husker online so some costs are saved there and the Rotella T6 is cheap these days. $40 in oil and $11 for filter is nothing compared to having someone cut your grass all summer. Trying to say that we all splurge in different ways and sleeper is happy with his oil change interval (and so am I). If I changed oil at 12,000 miles, it would be every 2 years. So sir, not me. My car sees short trips so condensation within crankcase needs to be kept in check. I'm glad to say we just did a round trip to New Orleans to get system fully purged of condensation and battery well charged.

Perhaps I need to get my mindset out of the TDI world and into the BMW world

I'm considering adding it to this oil change for this season as I will have my car at Gingerman and Autobahn for a few events this year as well as two 1/2 mile event. I like the idea of having a friction modifier in there but I am always weary of snake oil products. |

I'm a huge believer in AMSOIL. Oil takes a whoopen. I use it in everything. Doesnt break down that easily. It was great during dragracing and motocross. I also like amsoil cetanium in the diesel.

BMW has pretty loose bearing clearances, you can run 5w40 no problem. just put some into my N52 the other day. the lifters are very quiet now. |

If the Rotella or a 0w40 has a lower NOACK, you can say that the DPF is seeing LESS ash, because less of the oil is getting vaporized into the exhaust stream/intake. LL04 seems like a spec that came out at the time of high ash oils, back when ZDDP was used extensively. Nowadays with better base stocks, oils don't need as much additives. |

I purchase Archoil 9100 by the gallon, which is a bit cheaper. The last time I bought it I paid $219 shipped. It can now be purchased for $199 on Amazon. That's roughly $12 per oil change.
Rotell T6 $19.99-$22.99 x 2 (Usually purchase a few when i find it cheap) Oil filters $15-$20 (BMW, MAHLE, MANN and I try to buy in bulk) 7oz Achoil $12 It cost me $67-78ish per oil change. I think $12 worth of Archoil is worth it. I run it in everything. Hope this helps an sorry for the late response. Quote:

Switched to Rotella T6 today and one thing i noticed is the smell is more tolerable than my old oil from my exhaust. Overall seems like a good switch from my previous oil.

I have been on T6 for years. Have been monitoring somewhat elevated (but dropping) silica levels so am sending a sample to Blackstone at every OCI. Air filter is clean, there are no obvious intake leaks. Shrug.
