Man, definitely try a new battery. Normally they should be good for 7 years or so, unless you've been doing lots of short drives or in high ambient temps.


Alternatively, put a multimeter on the battery terminals and check the voltage with the ignition on (but engine off) and at engine idle.
From the Bentley manual:
Ignition ON and engine OFF--fully charged voltage is approx 12.6 volts.
With engine runing (charging voltage), normal voltage is approx. 14.0 volts.

On the positive side, if you keep replacing parts at this rate you're going to end up with what will essentially be a brand new 2008 335i.

That's a good point. I assume your car had the battery cable recall work done? Also: done correctly?

just encase someone has any new theories . I keep thinking a vacuum leak of some sort but cant seem to locate any issues (yet) replaced valve cover and related pcv parts before shift sector fwiw made no difference.

Sorry man not sure--I didn't pay too much attention to all of the uproar during the recall. I just simply had it done.

I know the circuit in question is used to monitor the battery's state, probably by observing both the voltage and current at the battery. So the recall was for cars that would stall out or not start, like the battery was dead, leads me to think the faulty monitor would effectively cause an intermittent or partial open circuit.

I don't know what they did to fix it.

It's ridiculous. Like a pebble in your shoe. It doesn't hurt all the time but when it does it is annoying! My logs indicate no boost leaks. I replaced all my vacuum hoses and vacuum stays present up to 30 min after shutting off the engine. I don't have much left on my list.

1. Diverter valves
2. DME chassis
3. Get factory reload of ECU from BMW
4. Replace battery
5. ??

There's a fuse in this part.

Perhaps it's starting to go bad?

Also, looks like there's some secondary connections (grounds or circuit monitoring connections?).

Perhaps they've frayed?

Honestly, between the two options I'd go with the battery.

I think the odds are better that it's just a very slowly fading battery causing brownout gremlins in the ECU and other electrics under certain conditions.

Modern BMWs are (in)famous for being extremely, and I mean extremely, sensitive to the battery's condition.

So, I just talked with my buddy who had the problem similar to OPs. I wanted to double check with him.

He stated one of the first things he noticed before things got progressively worse (over a period of a little over a year), was the engine simply wouldn't idle right. It would rev up and down, oscillating regularly like it couldn't find the right engine rpm.
Over the following months, he'd start having the more (BMW-)traditional battery symptoms of starting the car and his radio settings would have been reset, etc.

Eventually the battery died completely and the car wouldn't start. He replaced the battery, and the car ran perfectly again. No oscillating idle, no drivability issues, nothing.

Looking back on it, he thinks the first symptoms started for him with about 5 years on the battery; it died completely at year 7.

Thx man, this battery is at least 5. You have me convinced that replacing the battery is next! I have occasionally seen that idle oscillation also( cwarren - I believe you have this symptom as well?)

Not battery

Having the same issue......just so happens car died about a month ago while driving. Bad alternator and battery. Had both replaced. Still have the same issue with throttle hesitation/stumbling at 2-4% (usually 3rd or 4th gear at about 2000RPM0). I really think it's the updated software that BMW installed when I got the HPFP replaced. Living with it for now.

Do you get it while parked and holding 2-4% accel position?
