Just some fun facts:
The Panama Canal is a man-made canal in Central America which joins the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, it had an enormous impact on shipping between the two oceans, replacing the long and treacherous route via the Drake Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels 9,500 km (6,000 miles), well under half the 22,500 km (14,000 mi) route around Cape Horn.[1] Although the concept of a canal near Panama dates back to the early 16th century, the first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under French leadership. After this attempt failed and saw 21,900 workers die, the project of building a canal was attempted and completed by the United States in the early 1900s, with the canal opening in 1914. The building of the 77 km (51 mi) canal was plagued by problems, including disease (particularly malaria and yellow fever) and landslides. By the time the canal was completed, a total of 27,500 workers are estimated to have died in the French and American efforts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_Canal

It is very common for them to stop at multiple ports and they can hit two SoCal ports in a day. She will probably arrive in SD in the early morning hours of 5/8 and unload Volkswagens and Porsches then move on to PH later that day to arrive in PH closer to midnight on 5/8. At some point, the SD schedule will show her arrival time. I am not home (I am on my phone) so I can't look now.

Aislive has taken down their free AIS radar tracking on the web today (and, they raised their prices on their pay subscription service, as well). So, I have lost the ability to check AIS radar.

It is really a bummer that I lost AIS. Did you guys really see Grus on the PanCanal web cams? Sometimes you can see their name on the ship as they pass by the camera. It should only take 6-7 days for her to get to the SoCal region from the Canal. She is on the port of San Diego schedule for 5/8, but she could arrive early. I can't imagine why it would take eight days to get to San Diego. Unless, the port is booked and she is having to stall until 5/8. At some point, the port of San Diego schedule will show her ETA; the actual time of arrival. If she comes in during daylight hours, you can watch some fairly good web cams of her as she arrives. See the Camellia Ace and Hojin threads. I took good screenshots of those ships in the bay of San Diego. Very cool.
Here are the web cams. For Hojin, though, she parked out of view of the cam, but for Camellia Ace, we got to watch her unload Volkswagens and Porsches "live." The SD dock web cam: http://www.sdmis.org/view/24thcam.phtml The SD Bay web cam: (this camera is clickable and zoomable. You can click the screen to move the camera around to follow her all the way into and down the length of the bay. It is very cool.) http://live6.truelook.com/face/newfa...480&quality=65 Port of San Diego schedule http://www.sdmis.org/schedule/ Once she reaches the SoCal area, subscribe (for free) to shinemicro.com. You will be able to follow her on AIS radar "live" from port to port. She is also due into the port of Long Beach on 5/8. So, she should arrive in SD in the morning and depart for Long Beach early evening. |

Yes
I had the free subsciption and lost it around the same time you did. I used a different email address and reregistered and they gave a free trial for 2 weeks starting 05/02. As you may have guessed I am on the Grus. I missed it going the the PC as this was the time I has no AIS. I did pick it up in the Pacific Ocean on 05/01 late at night so I think it transisted on 05/01 not the 30th as some people had reported. It should have been a lot further up the coast if it managed to get through on the 30th. |
